What's the situation with the Chinese language in Malaysia?

Is standard Mandarin spoken widely in Malaysia? Is the accent something that many people have trouble with? Is Mandarin a first language for many people?

Sorry for throwing so many random questions at people, I've talked with many Malaysians who have accents I've not heard before, pronounce 了 as 'liao' all the time, and use 何时 instead of 什么时候, but have never been able to ask more about it. Oh, and whenever I ask if they prefer to speak with someone who speaks Malay they say no. I only speak standard Mandarin, so speaking in another dialect has never been an option, is there another dialect in Malaysia?

What are the best(least bad) Chinese TV shows?

Trying to improve the 听力, looking to move from documentary/lecture-style programs to more fluent speech. I am very aware that much of Chinese TV is not great. Currently planning on 人民的名义, all the episodes are available on youku afaik and it was super popular last time I in the guo. Is there anything I should know about that's comparable to/better than that?

Thank you for any suggestions

Exercises for learning grammar?

Hi guys, I have been successful with rote-learning words through Pleco but I still can't string the words together easily.

I did a bit of research and have come across the method where you write your vocab out on physical cards and rearrange them to make sentences - is this good?

Does anyone have some tips for an absolute beginner for learning grammar/ sentence structure as they learn new words? Thanks very much!

Advice for a conversationally fluent but illiterate Taiwanese-American?

Hi there! New here and hopefully this question is appropriate for this sub.

I grew up in a Chinese speaking household, went to Chinese school on the weekends but never took my studies seriously. I have a basic understanding of the written language but am pretty much illiterate. I ended up working in Bilingual Sales roles and have pretty strong listening and speaking skills, but am still completely dependent on Pinyin.

I’ve been trying to teach myself Chinese and possibly take the HSK exams. My goal here is to finally be able to read a newspaper and possibly study International Affairs in grad school (which will have a foreign language requirement).

My family members have been supportive and started tutoring me. They only know Traditional and I understand now the standard is Simplified. I’m getting overwhelmed and frustrated trying to learn both!

I think what I need is structure and just some general guidance for the new standard. Is there a textbook or study plan anyone here could recommend?

If anyone read this whole thing, thank you! :)

What are the most important, useful and funny phrases to know as an exchange student?

I will be going to Beijing through a 6 week student exchange programme, and wanted to research a few Chinese phrases that are most useful as a university student.

I have the most important basics for general conversation, such as hello, how are you, etc., that were easy to research, but wanted to ask whether you have some other phrases that are particularly helpful for social/party settings and maybe other simple phrases that are just amusing for both us foreigners and the locals?

Searching for some Chinese resources

I've already searched in on the resources here, but haven't found what I've been searching for, so I'm making this post.

I've been trying to find YouTube channels that teach Chinese Mandarin. I'm searching for something like "Japanese Ammo with Misa" (for Japanese) or "Go! Billy Korean" (for Korean). Any suggestion?

Also, besides the Chinese Grammar Wiki, are there other websites where they teach Chinese grammar? (something like the website HowToStudyKorean would be awesome)

I don't get this usage of 该

Hello everyone I'm listening this vido of 大山 and I don't understand the usage of 该 in a phrase. To give some context he's saying that beijing dialect doesn't sound good in expressing classic phrases. The phrase is 该北京话更不行 (min 5.44). Using Pleco i'd guess the meaning would fall under the "ought" or "be (北京话) turn" explanations. Please help!

"Correct" pronunciations and regional accents

Hi. I'm a Singaporean Chinese and was taught Mandarin as my second language in school. I was just wondering because it came up in a bit of a quibble online regarding 2 different words that stick out in my head.

I've always known that there's a difference between the way we were taught Chinese in school and the way it's pronounced in the northern Chinese accent but the two examples I'm going to bring up are 谢谢 and 杭州.

For instance, I notice many people from China, especially from the northern regions pronounce it like “shieh shieh" instead of with a clean X like in 洗手 or 西方人. Is either pronunciation "correct" or "wrong" or are both sort of accepted?

Someone went off to me the other day because I insisted that 杭 had a "ah" sound in it, while insisting that it rhymed with "long" using the international phonetic alphabet to back it up. Someone from China backed him up with a recording of himself that sounded incredibly Northern accented to me. Personally I would giggle if someone pronounced 上海 like "shonghai".

What I'm trying to get at is, are they right? In my head they're technically wrong but it's correct in their accent. Is there an official standard?

I've tried to look it up but I can't find a reliable source in English and I'm not fluent enough to look it up in Chinese (overseas too so I haven't been able to ask my friends).

I NEED HELP

hello, i am doing a project about mandarin and im trying to figure out what makes adjectives from been adjectives,

SO far , i got the pattern that adjectives are followed by de.

such as:

hot

rè de

cold

lěng de

cute

kě'ài de

the house is big

Fángzi shì dà de

the ice cream is soft

Bīngqílín shì róuruǎn de

the bed is hard

Chuáng shì jiānyìng de

but some sentences, "de" is not there such as:

some hot water

Yīxiē rè shuǐ

many fast cars

Hěnduō kuàichē

OR when its modified by an adverb:

the water is very hot

Fúwù shōu fēicháng shuài

the car is very fast

Chē fēicháng kuài

the cat is very cute

Māo fēicháng kě'ài

is this correct? if so, why did it lost the marker "de"

In which appropriate setting(s) would a native Mandarin speaker use 一点儿,有点儿,一会儿,and 一下?

I understand that they all generally mean “a little”, but is there one that is more preferable than the others in a given situation? I’m just trying to comprehend the differences between the four terms... Any advice/memorization tricks to keep me from confusing one for another would be greatly appreciated!

Another "Should I learn Mandarin or Cantonese?" Question (My Unique Situation)

Most importantly, I am a Caucasian person who lives in the USA, first and only language is English. I don't plan on ever living in China, and MAYBE if I visit East Asia in the distant future, it'll probably be Hong Kong.

Here is my situation: I live in a part of the USA with a rapidly growing East Asian population and I'd like to be able to converse with them and perhaps even make some friends or acquaintances (Honestly, most people are Korean near me, but I like the Chinese language much better and it's easier to pronounce for me. ^_^ ). I am not learning Chinese for any career opportunities. It just seems like a fun and useful language.

I'm really torn between Mandarin and Cantonese. What I like about Mandarin is, from what I've seen, it seems pretty EASY (concerning SPEAKING it, not talking about reading or writing), and the grammar seems easier than my native English, LOL. It also is the most popular language in the world, and many of my fellow non-Asian Americans seem to be learning it. There is also a ton of useful learning material online. I'm currently looking at Youtube videos and it seems like there is an abundance of lessons.

What I like about Cantonese is how it sounds. I love the emphatic "AH"s at the end of almost every sentence and it just seems like the language is more flamboyant and expressive. Also, most the Chinatowns (especially San Francisco and Manhatten) are apparently very Cantonese-dominant. If most Chinese-Americans speak Cantonese, the choice would be obvious, but people are saying Cantonese is a dying language and it's not being passed on from generation to generation and pretty soon, most of the Chinese-speaking areas of the US will become predominantly Mandarin. This is just what I've heard.

If you were in my situation, what would you choose?

Why is this sentence incorrect?

My chinese teacher taught me the phrase "养儿防老." I am trying to say "In China people raise children so the children can take care of them when they are old (using the above phrase). This is what I came up with but I'm SURE it's wrong. I just don't know how to correct it :(

Help with a Project (anki deck )

Obs: sorry if this post is in the wrong place (this is my first time using reddit)

Hello everyone. My name is Renan and I'd like someone's help with a project. I have a list of chinese preposition + verb (like 对。。。重要; 学习中文对我重要。) that I got from quizlet. This list doesn't have examples, just the preposition and the verb. So, I want to put an example for each one of the items on this list. However, It's time consuming to copy and past the examples from the website yellowbridge ( https://www.yellowbridge.com/chinese/dictionary.php). I'd like to known if anyone here who knows programming could help me with this. I know that coders can automate this process and do the whole job in minutes. After that, I'll create an anki deck with the list and share it. Could anyone here help me with this?

Thanks in advance.

How hard is it to learn Chinese?

So I am an International Affairs major at an military college, who chose to do my concentration in Asia, particularly China. I am going to have to take Chinese classes next year, which are linked classes, meaning that I will be taking 1001 and 1002 at the same time.

I think I will thrive in the Chinese concentration, mostly because I've met many friends from the country and have experienced their culture and history many times. My only concern is taking the already overwhelming classes and learning the language. I really wanna do well and learn but I just would like to know any tips or advice to help me out.

Will they let me know if I pass the HSK?

I just took an HSK2 exam a few days ago and I think I did really well. I’m nervous though because when I log into chinesetest.cn, and then put in that almost 20 digit code that was on the admission ticket I printed out, nothing happens, it just reloads the submission form.

I lost the little ticket they gave me to log into the computer to take the test is this what I need to see my score?

How and when do they let you know if you pass it?

I've been watching the new Meteor Garden (流星花园), do they dub over with different voice actors?

I've seen a few suggestions on here to watch the Meteor Garden on Netflix. The voices really don't seem to match up to the lips of the actors. But the style of the voices, the way they talk, they really sound like different people to me. Is this true?

If so I'm wondering why. I just read a book (A Billion Voices by David Moser) in which he talks about China's struggle during the huge growth in media to find people with really standard putonghua. Since the actors are from various places in China, maybe their putonghua isn't up to snuff? Or maybe this has similarities to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where the girl up on stage (Lin Miaoke) was actually lipsyncing to a song sang by another girl (Yang Peiyi)?

When I make a declarative statement (such as “Wo shi Meiguoren”) that ends on a rising tone, my English instincts kick in and tell me I’m speaking this as if asking a question. How to learn pinyin?

I am just getting into learning Chinese and following the teachyourselfmandarin blog advice and learning pinyin first. However while they advice to master pinyin they don't leave a lot of good resources. Aside from the pinyin charts with all the syllables I wasn't able to find any good app or similar to practice it. I would like to find something like an Ankii deck with all pinyin syllables and their tone variations, I searched around a bit on this sub and wasn't able to find anything. Could someone point me in the right direction? Is it sensible to learn all of the pinyin syllables before moving on with the characters?

PLECO Flashcard: Sentence Contextual Writing

On the PLECO forums, leguan and Shun created a great set of Flashcard based on Sentence Contextual Writing. I think it's pretty fantastic, so I'm reposting it here. Hopefully some of you will find it useful. The full link to PLECO post here.

Flashcard Set Name: Sentence Contextual Writing

Creator: @leguan

Credits: @Shun for providing most of the sentences that these flashcards are based on

Purpose: Test your ability to write the target character [普通话] based on the pinyin pronunciation [pǔtōnghuà] in the context of a complete sentence in Chinese.

Quantity: In excess of 20,000+ sentences!

Example: 他是中国人,但不会说 pǔtōnghuà.

Testing tiers:

  1. Reading: Ability to understand the individual characters in Mandarin without pinyin.

  2. Pronunciation: Ability to read out loud the entire sentence.

  3. Gestalt: Ability to understand the overall meaning and context of the sentence. This ability ensures that the correct character is written as there are several Chinese characters with the same pinyin pronunciation.

This flashcard system is unique as it tests the following (in the above example):

  1. The user is able to understand all 12 characters above and how they are used;

  2. The user is able to write the target characters '普通话', meaning they are able to write and pronounce it as well.

  3. This flashcard system takes a more top down approach to reviewing learnt characters. This is essential as it takes learning Chinese characters up a higher level where one focuses more on the context where the characters is used, rather on pure rote learning or brute force.

Required level: HSK 2 and above.

The list is organized via levels from HSK 2-6 thanks to Shun over at PLECO.

Addendum: Detailed explanation of usage by Leguan
The purpose of the flashcards is primarily to practice recalling and writing Chinese words in a way that simulates the process of recognizing the meaning of words from speech sounds in the context of complete sentences.

Each flashcard is therefore a sentence with the Chinese characters of the word to be tested replaced with the corresponding pinyin.

After configuring and beginning a "new test" with the parameters as per the attached screenshots, you will first be presented with a "sentence". Your goal is to read the sentence and handwrite the Chinese characters for the tested word shown in pinyin. If you can't recognize the tested word you can use the reveal definition to see the English translation as a hint.

After revealing the card you then self-grade yourself and proceed to the next card.

A secondary goal is to practice your reading comprehension and recollection of the pronunciation of each word in the sentence presented. When I use these cards I only give myself a remembered perfectly grade if I can recall and write the tested word without any hints AND correctly comprehend the meaning of the sentence AND correctly recall the pronunciation of each word in the sentence.

Why is 到 and 比較 used in this sentence?

到哪裡喝茶比較好? books translation: where’s a good place to go have tea?

Two questions: 1. I am getting the impression that 到 can be used as ‘to go’ in certain situations, is that right? Is 到 and 去 interchangeable?

  1. Is 比較 really necessary in this sentence? The previous sentence of the dialogue was: 台北有很多茶館. Is this just emphasizing which is the BEST place to go?

HSK 6 vocab categories

I'm starting to study for HSK 6 in June, and I've read that a good way to manage all the vocab is to break it down into categories. However, because the vocab at this level is somewhat abstract, I'm having a hard time thinking of categories to use (besides part of speech, which I don't think would be helpful for me anyway).

Does anyone who's studied for HSK 6 (or any other level) have suggestions for how to divide up the vocab to make studying it less of a daunting task? Thanks!

My learning set up + request for suggestions

大家好!

So this is my set up to learn Chinese.

  1. I have a set of physical books.
  2. I use the app Skritter (paid, but worth every penny) to learn to write characters (even if all you want to do is recognize characters, recognizing becomes easy after you learn to write them). I can add my books into Skritter, and the app brings new characters in the same order as the book. After I memorize a character set for a chapter, I go into the book to learn grammar, do exercises, etc.
  3. Skritter integrates well with Pleco. When learning a new character, I can deep dive on that character with Pleco, getting extra sentences examples, and looking into the radicals.
  4. I use TrainChinese app as my secondary dictionary app.

What I'm missing:

  • Radicals: While Pleco is good to look into radicals, it's not that great. I found that radicals is the key to improve my learning abilities, so I've been trying to find a good app to learn radicals, but no luck yet. I'd be interested in features like:
    • find character,
    • look at its radical, its meaning,
    • if I could learn the history of the character, of knowing why certain radicals/characters contain certain meaning.
    • what other words have the same radical?
  • Listening. How do I practice listening, knowing that I only have a limited amount of vocabulary (based on my character set I learned used Skritter)?

What do you guys think of this set up? Any suggestions to tackle the areas I'm missing?

Cheers, 再見

choosing a chinese name & having trouble determining whether a name is male or female ~

hi all ! i live & work in beijing, not planning on leaving any time soon, & i feel like it's the stage in my mandarin-learning process (now that i'm actually chatting to locals etc) where i should probably make myself a chinese name, as my english name is very long and doesn't transliterate very well. i'm having some problems determining whether characters that i like are too masculine for a girl's name -- my name in english is also sort of androgynous (it's the female form of a male name), & i'm not that girly myself, so i don't mind it not being a girly name, but i also don't want it to be 100% a boy's name to the point people think i didn't think it through/think it's weird, if you get my vibe.

my english surname is kennedy, so for the surname i was thinking 阚?康?凯 ?(dictionary says 凯 can be a surname, but i've never heard it as such so far). given name 昊瀚?昊沄?just 昊?? my first name means 'free' in english, so i like the idea of something evoking the vastness of the sky/sea ... however, everyone seems to be telling me that 昊 is a very masculine character, but it's one of the only ones that i found that fits what i think i'm looking for. i guess my question is, should i just pick another character or is there some rule/guideline on how to make a subtle feminine name ? i've had some opinions already but thought i would try & crowd-source a little ! or maybe i'm trying to push a western idea of boy/girl names onto chinese names that don't have the same binary ?

有...没 Is this a sort of grammar structure?

I was chatting with a friend speaking about learning English, when suddenly he typed this out 有这方面书没.

I have never seen this structure before and am wondering is this essentially the same as 你有没有? Such as 你有没有一瓶水?

Looking for functionality that may not exist

I'm looking for a way to easily create vocabulary lists from words in an article. In a perfect world, a program would scan the document, creating a list of all of the words in the document, ordered by frequency of appearance. Then, ideally, I would be able to edit the list, getting rid of the obvious words. I'm told something like this exists in Wenlin, but can't figure it out. Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Is there any software that can take a text and break it down into distinct words with definitions?

To make a long story short, I have given up on learning to speak Mandarin, but I am still interested in learning to read literature written in Modern Chinese. It has been said that anyone can learn to read any novel written in any language by studying the first 20 pages in detail and then reading the rest with a dictionary:

https://www.reddit.com/r/languagelearning/comments/a7ikrs/learning_languages_for_reading_a_tale_of_two/?st=JSKLAX57&sh=17193d74

I would like to try this, but I would like to divide the process of understanding the first 20 pages into separate steps of learning vocabulary and then figuring out the grammar. I imagine that I could use flash cards to learn the words. Read through a good grammar book and then work out the grammar used on the first 20 pages by studying it alongside English translations written by human translators.

The problem for this is that I have no idea how to pick out words. Is there any existing software that can break a sample of a work of literature into distinct words (preferably with definitions) that I could use as a learning aid?

This works on a lot of keyboards, but for the best results, you should use a Chinese pinyin keyboard (for Android users it should be GBoard, iOS has one built in).

Do 包扮 and 艺话 work as puns?

Long story short, I don't know a word of Chinese but character design demands some... and I always want to be too punny for my own good.

First one is 包扮. If I understand correctly, 包办 means "to run the whole show". If I switch 办 (to do, to handle) with 扮 (to disguise, to play a role), is it a funny play on words or just sort of meaningless/confusing? The pinyin for both is bàn so I assume they're pronounced the same. Also, can a phrase like this be used as a nickname or a part of one?

The second one would be a (male) character's name: 文艺话. First off, does this name make sense on its own if no pun is intended (but it doesn't really need to be a "normal"/"realistic" name)? And as for the puns: Does 文艺 (literature) as a last name + given name combo look intended or just weird? Does 艺话 (art/skill + speech) work as a pun of 逸话 (rumor, anecdote)? Tbh, I originally wanted to name him just 文艺兴, but apparently it's the name of a famous K-pop star...

Chinese names feel like an endless pit of quicksand. Except sinking in this pit is fun and I don't really even want to get out yet. Heh.

Listening skills lagging behind...

I've been studying Mandarin for about 6 years now on and off and I'm finally starting to get comfortable with speaking. (I'm a slow learner...) When I speak to native Chinese people they say my pronunciation is good and they can fully understand what I am saying. The problem though is if they speak back to me, most of the time I don't know what they are saying, even if they are saying words I know. For some reason it is just not registering in my brain what they are saying unless they talk deliberately and slowly.

Any tips on how to improve my listening skills? I live in the UK so not immersed in the language but I have many native Chinese friends I can converse with.

China’s Social Media Crackdown Targets Twitter

Image via Pixabay

Most western social media (社交媒体shè jiāo méi tǐ) in China is blocked, including Twitter (推特tuī tè).

The Chinese government tries to control the internet, but Chinese users gain access to the blocked websites. They use circumvention tools, such as a special software called VPN (virtual private networks), to visit the websites. Most of them do so for fun, but some dissidents use the social media platform to disseminate their ideas. Lately, the Chinese authorities have been extending their control over Chinese netizens and censoring their publications, even those published in blocked media. They were targeting Chinese Twitter users.

Guangzhou activist Wang Aizhong’s Twitter, for example, was attacked. He described himself as social activist in his profile, and his tweets (推文tuī wén) discuss human rights. In December he was surprised to find his feed empty and his contacts lost. He tweeted his story:

“前天夜里一点钟左右手机收到推特验证码。后来上推特来看,发现推文全部被删。我关注的一千多人也全部被取消”

“Qián tiān yè lǐ yī diǎn zhōng zuǒ yòu shǒu jī shōu dào tuī tè yàn zhèng mǎ. Hòu lái shàng tuī tè lái kàn, fā xiàn tuī wén quán bù bèi shān. Wǒ guān zhù de yī qiān duō rén yě quán bù bèi qǔ xiāo”

“Around one o’clock the night before, my phone received Twitter verification code. Later, on Twitter, I found all my tweets were deleted. More than a thousand people I was following were removed.”

He concluded by blaming the Chinese authorities (当局 dāng jú) for invading (入侵rù qīn) his Twitter.

Wang Aizhong’s Twitter wasn’t the first to be targeted. Wu Gan, a 37-year-old businessman from Fujian, became a productive activist in 2009. He wrote guide handbooks for his fellow activists, encouraged netizens to take action, and assisted many human rights cases across China. He was detained in 2015 and sentenced to eight years in prison for subversion of state power( 煽动颠覆国家政权shān dòng diān fù guó jiā zhèng quán).

Wu Gan had not tweeted since 2015, until November, when an auto-generated tweet by his name says: “I just activated @Tweet_Delete on my account to automatically delete my old tweets (is.gd/delete)!”. Chinese Twitter users (推特用户tuī tè yòng hù), like this one, believe the government is responsible: “the account activated a third party tool called @tweet_delete which is banned by @Twitter. You may wonder who did this? ”

Another Twitter user by the name Rain, vanished late November. Her Twitter friend was worried. She tweeted:

@Rain8909 已一周不见。。。早日回来!”

“Rain8909 yǐ yī zhōu bù jiàn … zǎo rì huí lái! ”

“Rain8909 haven’t seen for a week, hope she’ll be back soon! ”

Rain tweeted again in December and told her followers she was detained for ten days. She was beaten and interrogated by the police. Her crime (罪行zuì xíng), she wrote, was publishing her opinions regarding the state system and leaders online:

“罪行是:网络发表言论涉及到了国家领导人和国家体制”

“Zuì xíng shì: wǎng luò fā biǎo yán lùn shè jí dào le guó jiā lǐng dǎo rén hé guó jiā tǐ zhì”

More and more incidents of deleted tweets and detained Twitter users have piled up in recent months. It seems the government is trying to remove present and past criticism from the network (网络 wǎng luò). Chinese human rights activists believe it’s not a coincidence. They believe it’s a well-planned national crackdown (镇压zhèn yā) on Twitter users.
