Is standard Mandarin spoken widely in Malaysia? Is the accent something that many people have trouble with? Is Mandarin a first language for many people?
Sorry for throwing so many random questions at people, I've talked with many Malaysians who have accents I've not heard before, pronounce 了 as 'liao' all the time, and use 何时 instead of 什么时候, but have never been able to ask more about it. Oh, and whenever I ask if they prefer to speak with someone who speaks Malay they say no. I only speak standard Mandarin, so speaking in another dialect has never been an option, is there another dialect in Malaysia?
