I've been studying Mandarin for about 6 years now on and off and I'm finally starting to get comfortable with speaking. (I'm a slow learner...) When I speak to native Chinese people they say my pronunciation is good and they can fully understand what I am saying. The problem though is if they speak back to me, most of the time I don't know what they are saying, even if they are saying words I know. For some reason it is just not registering in my brain what they are saying unless they talk deliberately and slowly.
Any tips on how to improve my listening skills? I live in the UK so not immersed in the language but I have many native Chinese friends I can converse with.
