hi all ! i live & work in beijing, not planning on leaving any time soon, & i feel like it's the stage in my mandarin-learning process (now that i'm actually chatting to locals etc) where i should probably make myself a chinese name, as my english name is very long and doesn't transliterate very well. i'm having some problems determining whether characters that i like are too masculine for a girl's name -- my name in english is also sort of androgynous (it's the female form of a male name), & i'm not that girly myself, so i don't mind it not being a girly name, but i also don't want it to be 100% a boy's name to the point people think i didn't think it through/think it's weird, if you get my vibe.
my english surname is kennedy, so for the surname i was thinking 阚？康？凯 ？（dictionary says 凯 can be a surname, but i've never heard it as such so far). given name 昊瀚？昊沄？just 昊?? my first name means 'free' in english, so i like the idea of something evoking the vastness of the sky/sea ... however, everyone seems to be telling me that 昊 is a very masculine character, but it's one of the only ones that i found that fits what i think i'm looking for. i guess my question is, should i just pick another character or is there some rule/guideline on how to make a subtle feminine name ? i've had some opinions already but thought i would try & crowd-source a little ! or maybe i'm trying to push a western idea of boy/girl names onto chinese names that don't have the same binary ?
