Tips for memorizing characters

Hello everyone, I’m so happy I found this community on reddit. I’m currently taking my first semester of Mandarin in college right now and the struggle is killing my enthusiasm for learning this language. I tried everything from flash cards, Quizlet, sentence memorization etc. but I can’t seem to memorize the characters. I almost dread going to class now because I just feel lost and not understanding the foundational basics. Any tips or guidance would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

We use Integrated Chinese Vol. 4 for our class.

I have been listening to some Mandarin music lately and I still haven't figured out if the artists are singing with tones or it's just contextually understood. Any insight?

Okay this sentence with the 把 particle is throwing me for a loop.

Still trying to grasp the the 把 particle. Saw this sentence, and while I understand the meaning, I can't figure out how to deconstruct the grammar with the 把 usage. Maybe you can help clarify?

你吃蛋糕把肚子吃壞了.

So basically, "You upset your stomach by eating that cake". From what I'm told the 把 particle is supposed to highlight the disposal or impact upon the object (what?) with the result of the disposal or impact indicated by the element following the verb (hunh?)

The best I can try to rationalize is "You eat cake take stomach eat bad". And I'm guessing the 了 used there is the "updating you on the latest information" 了.

Well, am I close in deconstructing correctly?

Tips for hsk 6

I have to pass hsk 6 to graduate but I can't seem to get it. Even tough I felt good about the reading part I did it the worst, so I focused on it a lot and it improved last time, but now I got a lot lower score for listening and writing...

The new interface where you can't preview the next question in the listening part also isn't helping, I think this is the reason I did worse on the listening part this time.

I just really want to pass and feel hopeless right now. I'm even starting to be open to more "creative" ways to pass.

Do you read any programming blogs to learn vocab?

Assuming some of you guys are programmers, do you ever read any Chinese programming blogs in order to learn the fundamental programming vocabulary as well as the slang?

By fundamental vocabulary, I mean words like heap, stack, recursion, linked list, and etc. By slang I mean things like fixing bugs, box (for virtual machines), "hit" like hit a REST API, and etc.

Incidentally, I know some Chinese speakers who studied in the US, who have told me that they cannot read Chinese technical documents simply because they would need to look up every other word.

Another Chinese version of a popular song, Dragostea Din Tei, adapted (poorly) by me.

Hey guys, like I've posted before, here's another attempt of writing a Chinese version of a song, in this case it's Dragostea Din Tei. It's not as literal as the other one, my focus was on making it rhyme better and sound more natural (except for the Picasso part, I couldn't come up with anything else). If you could give me some feedback it would be awesome! Here it goes:

我在这里

我在唱歌

我在迷路

不可明白

啊喂? 你好,是我,一个贼

我在求你,我的爱,接受这个快乐

Alo, alo, 是我,Picasso

呼叫了你

我有勇气

你知道我不要问你

你会离开但不想我来

不想我来

不想不想我的爱

你的脸和向日葵的光

进我的眼睛都一样

I'm having some trouble understanding 起來 as a grammar point.

Hi. Another grammar question. I came across 起來 in my Chinese textbook, and it was described as "indicating the moment when something static becomes dynamic, that is, signifies the beginning of an action or state".

I think I understand the basic principle, but even looking at the examples in the book that I'm about to post here, it's not connecting with me. Maybe you can help me understand more clearly? Or point to another resource that goes more in depth? I couldn't find one online myself. Also, is an object always placed in between 起 and 來? Thanks.

Why is 1 sometimes pronounced yāo?

I know it's used in reading out things like phone numbers and addresses, but I don't get why you can't just use yī. It's not like there's another digit that sounds kind of like it like 四/十 (though ten isn't a digit so that doesn't matter in reading digits)

using "呢" without making the sentence a question?

I was talking to my Chinese friend and she said "吃了呢~" is a cute way of replying to the greeting "你吃了吗?". I assumed "吃了呢~" meant "have you eaten?" but she said it meant "I have eaten".

It really confused me and she couldn't explain why it wouldn't be a question, can anyone else me understand and give me other examples? I'm very much a beginner in Chinese, so is this an advanced usage of "呢"?

Looking for alternative to Duolingo for learning Mandarin

I am an adult American-born Chinese person and I grew up listening to Mandarin around my parents but doing very little speaking or reading. This year I decided to start learning to speak and read better, using Duolingo. I am now finished up to Level 1 of each module on Duolingo, and I am done with it because it has a lot of mistakes translating more complicated sentences. Also it doesn't seem to teach you any explicit rules for grammar, and sometimes I just need that.

I would like find a more suitable tool for me to continue to progress and practice. What programs are out there for someone at my level?

我最近去中国做大学旅行,有问提问/ I just went to China, AMA

Learning Chinese as a written only language (no verbal components)

Do you think that it is possible to learn Chinese without learning any pronunciation?

I was learning Chinese for a few years and struggled to learn proper pronunciation the whole time. I just can't get around the correct tones, and just trying to do so made the whole process a chore.

Since I don't plan on talking or listening to anyone, I would mostly communicate by internet in written form, and read books and stuff, I thought that I could focus on just that. And afterwards if I felt comfortable I could introduce pronunciation by watching movies subtitled in Chinese...

What are your thoughts on that?

I am trying to talk about renting a place but I am having some difficulties grasping grammar I think... I note that there are numerous ways to use help and I am unsure whether I have grasped this either. I also wanted to use
乔迁 but all the text books I have use 聚会.

Any help would be awesome:

去年我和家人住在一条繁忙 街道的公寓里.我们的公寓很小. 今年我们找了一所房子.

因为我们有一条小狗所以需要房东允许养宠物.

我的朋友在租房公司工作. 我给我的朋友打电话了, 让她来 帮助我. 我说: 我要租房子. 她 帮助 我. 房子有厨房,一共三室两厅两卫,还有一个后院. 房租每个月一千块钱,不含 水电费 星期五下午5点我们有一个聚会.

Merged characters

For two years now I’ve been studying a bit of simplified Chinese by myself. And now I’m transitioning to studying both simplified and traditional characters, which is surprisingly fun and interesting. But there’s one part that confuses me and that’s the merged characters. I just discovered about it yesterday as I learnt 裡. I thought the definition was a bit lacking, so I looked it up and learned that 裡 and 里 were merged into 里. I also learned about many others like 麵 and 面 merging into 面, 後 and 后 merging into 后, 氣 and 气 merging into 气. I found this source:source, but I would like to find something more in-depth. I feel it’s hard to find much information about this topic. I still don’t know the purpose old 气, for instance. Couldn’t find it even in pleco.

So if anyone has a good source on this topic, I would be immensely grateful.

谢谢

Struggling to remember adverbs/time words etc

Slightly vague title but I wasn't sure how to word it.

Basically (in all aspects of my Chinese), I find it really difficult to remember the words that make up sentences. I can usually work out what it is that people talking about but I can never remember the words that related to it - eg. adverbs, direction words, time phrases - that actually make up the content; for example, if someone said they frequently ate pork buns on their way to work then I would be able to pick up that they ate pork buns and that they did it at a time related to work, but I wouldn't be able to catch the full sentence.

I know this is a bit of an odd issue but I'm currently in China and it's become more of a pressing issue so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone had any tips for getting words like this down because it's hugely hindering my Chinese level.

Thank you in advance!

Need help with differentiating two syllabes!

Hello everyone! First of all, I apologize if I swap concept names or confuse them, it's my first day learning chinese.

I just started learning chinese from a free site, which apparently has a lot of resources (it's in spanish, mind you):

http://hablochino.com

I've started practicing pronunciation with the Pinyin, and while I can differentiate most of them, the "zh" and "ch" seem exactly the same. In the phonetical dictionary, ch appears with the pronunciation ts (with a little stick on the bottom of the s) and a (') added, while zh just has the ts identical to ch, but without the (').

What am I exactly missing here?

Thank you in advance!

My Handwriting quality on english vs. the Mandarin Chinese language

Through kindergarten to about half of second grade, I went to a Chinese emersion school that taught us how to read and write in mandarin as well as learn about east-asian countries. Although since it was a real school, they did have to also teach the traditional American lessons, but they definitely put a lot less emphasis on english writing and reading than they should have, because at the second grade, my friends and I barely knew how to read and almost completely didn’t know how to spell beside basic 1-3 word sentences. What the school did focus on was the characters in the Chinese language. They made us practice over and over, dozens of new words a day, until we were at the point that we were accidentally speaking in Chinese outside of school. So when I moved to one of my traditional elementary schools in my district in the middle of 2nd grade, I was at a kindergartener level of literacy, but by the end of 2nd grade/start of 3rd grade, I was at a regular 3rd grade reading and writing level. Except for one aspect. Neatness. I wrote so sloppily, and no matter how hard I try, it was sloppy. Years went by, and I quickly forgot all of the Chinese I ever learned. Through the years, my grammar improves, spelling stays up to par/above average and so does reading, but wand writing stayed the same, and it’s still sloppy to this day. But the other day, I found a discovery. I was cleaning out my room when I found old notebooks with my old emersion school notes in them with chinese symbols that I wrote long ago. That alone was cool for me to see, but even more interesting was the writing itself: It was neat! With Such a complex language with complex symbols, and being so young and only having 3 and a half years to do it, I mastered it. I am a freshman in high school now, I’ve had 7 and a half years to improve my handwriting and It barely did. I wonder since my brain was much more observant back then, that maybe that school hard wired my hands to draw symbols. Just an idea, if you guys have any Ideas on how this could be, tell me! If not, I hope you enjoyed the story.

Help me write a song in Mandarin!

Hey guys how are you? I'm testing a new method for learning Chinese, writing versions of songs from other languages. In this case, I tried writing a Chinese version of the traditional Italian protest song Bella Ciao, made popular recently by the show La Casa de Papel. I'm still a beginner, so the sentence structure is probably awkward and/or way off. I tried keeping it in the same rhythm as the original, I might try recording me singing it tomorrow to embarrass myself even further lol. Anyways here it goes, any suggestions, feedback, criticism, compliment or comment is welcome! Thanks!

A:是吗?我得回家见爸妈,我最近没给他们打电话,所以我是挺不好的孩子。

R:回家,你怎么走?坐火车,电车,还是船?

A:我都不坐,我要坐飞机因为很快的。

R:那,飞机票,你买了吗?去飞机场,你要坐公共汽车,打车,还是坐地铁?

A:飞机票,我已经买了,不过,我不知道怎么走,你可以帮我吗?

R:好,我觉得坐公共汽车跟坐地铁一样不方便因为你得坐很多站。

A:是吗?我想坐公共汽车或者地铁因为别人告诉我都是很快的!

R:不,不,不!有的时候很快,可是这个时间有很多人!除了坐公共汽车和坐地铁以外,你还打车吧。

A:可是我听说打车很难,对不对?

R:不对,因为你只要先走路去出租汽车站,再打车去飞机场,很容易!

A:虽然我要坐方便的汽车,不过打车很贵,我没有多钱

R:最近我学了开车了,我还是开车送你去飞机场吧

A:太好了!谢谢你!我的飞机是晚上八点的,如果高速公路上的汽车特别多的话,就我们什么时候要去飞机场?

R:在高速公路上的开车,每个人都开车开得很快!我很紧张!

A:那我们下午五点就开车去飞机场,好吗?我们在城市的路有很多时间开车,你不会紧张。

R:好,我可以一边开车一边聽音樂!

A:在五分钟,就要回家了做功课,我到家以后才给你发短信。

R:好,再见!

A:再见!

Does anyone know where I can find this show online, with Chinese or English subtitles? I was watching an upload of the series on Youtube which had both but it was taken down, and now while you can watch it on the official CCTV channel, it unfortunately does not have subtitles. I'm happy to pay for it, but I haven't been able to find any streams on the internet. DVD won't work for me as I don't have a DVD player. Cheers!

Words to know for Essay Writing?

Hi, I am currently in the first year of the IB program and am taking Chinese B HL. We have already been doing a lot of writing and I feel like my work is subpar, mostly due to the lack of words to use and structuring. The formats for writing that we have used are speech, debate, a blog and emails. Can anyone recommend words for me to add to a word list in order to improve my writing?

Right now I have a few simple words: 利弊, 意思, 感覺 and a few more.

Chinese tutor looking for students for online/offline lessons

Hi! I'm Nicole and I'm from the central east part of China. I speak standard Mandarin( not everyone in China speaks good Mandarin. For example, people from the south may struggle with pronouncing certain sounds as their dialects can be really different from Mandarin).

I have been teaching Chinese for a couple years and I'm now looking for more students for online/offline lessons(if you live in Beijing as well) . I will design a curriculum based on your level and interest.

- the very beginners who want to start from Pinyin;

- learners who aspire to combat through HSK1-HSK5;

- advanced learners who need more practice and culture reference;

- learners who want to learn oral Chinese/ slangs.

Hourly rate: 15 dollars

PM me for more details. Thanks!

8 Years of Videos

After 8 years of sharing videos on Chinese language and culture, this will be my final video post on the Transparent Chinese channel. As such, I’ve put together a nice recap on 8 years of videos to share with you.

8 Years of Videos

Some of the many highlights.

It’s been a wild ride that included living in both Beijing and Kunming, working as an English teacher and blogger while studying Chinese here and there.

We traveled all over China to several different cities and historical sights, including the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, Jiuzhaigou National Park in Sichuan, and the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang.

Of course, we enjoyed tons of delicious Chinese food along the way – dumplings, hot pot, Beijing roast duck, and so much more. We even tried some odd things along the way.

Our time in China was also tons of fun, thanks to all the traditional Chinese holidays, as well as several music and beer festivals.

Check out some of the many highlights of my time in China in this compilation video. Thanks for watching over the years! If you want to see more of my video work, find my page at Grateful Gypsies.

Are there any apps on Android which allow users to make a list of Chinese characters, then write them without seeing them or tracing them?

Every app I've found shows you the character and asks you to trace it, OR write it after just having saw it. I want to do it from memory, for example have a prompt in English or Pinyin, then have to write the character below. It's ok if the app is totally in Chinese. Thanks :)

Help understanding a sentence I found in my Mandarin Graded Reader book please!(:

你好!我有一个问题。我正在读一个中国的书,和我不了解一个话语。The sentence is: “不过,小朋(that’s the name of the character) 知道,他不可能做真的王子,所以他又想,能见一见真王子就已经很不错了.” I understand the the sentence except for the last part “就已经很不错了”。I understand that “很不错了”means “very good” but why does it say “就”, ”已经” ,and “了” when it could just say “是很不错”?

Any explanation is appreciated (:

Am i wasting my time learning to write Chinese characters?

My journey with Chinese initially started when i lived there and I was doing the Anki deck "Spoonfed Chinese", which im sure some of you are familiar with. I spent most of the day doing it, testing myself on every phrase, i would only pass it if i looked away from my monitor and was able to write the characters out just by hearing the sentence. It was boring as hell, but I learned a lot, went through a lot of paper too.

A friend of mine decided he would only learn to read the characters and made waaaaaaaaaay more progress than I did, by the end of the year he was close to fluent good. Covered far more of the deck than i did, but couldn't handwrite the characters, only type them on a pinyin keyboard.

I took a GCSE exam when i got home because i needed a language GCSE to get into university, and i was glad that I had took the time to learn to write because the tests were handwritten. Fast forward to today and I'm studying International Business and Chinese at university and got bumped up to the second year class because i had a good level to begin with. However all of my exams have been done on the computer using pinyin and im using a computer more and more. I've been debating blowing the dust off that old deck, or potentially doing more stuff on the computer like Duolingo or Memrise, but the issue of writing is playing on my mind. If i commit to just typing then i can cover a lot more ground, and im beginning to think that in our modern era writing is just unnecessary, i even have the google pictograph drawing system on my phone so i wouldn't forget how to write characters but after typing on the computer the pinyin keyboard looks a lot more tempting.

I just looked it up and I saw that you can do HSK 6 on a keyboard, so im beginning to wonder if there's any point in me putting myself through the effort.

I want to know your opinions on the matter, also, i have debated buying one of these (https://goo.gl/images/gHMkKo), has anyone used one to remember how to write the characters instead of a pinyin Keyboard? How do you remember how to handwrite characters? Is it useful in this day and age? What's your experience?

Which province should I choose

After finishing my degree this year, I plan on carrying out a year as an English language assistant through the British council programme. I have already participated in the programme during my studies and spent 9 months teaching English in Hamburg. I take my HSK 3 Exam on 1st, Dec and aspire to sit my HSK 4 soon after (at least before going to China mid August 2019). Now for the typical naive misconceptions of a 菜鸟:I realise the standard Mandarin I am learning is inspired by North-Eastern Mandarin and no matter which city I choose, an accented Mandarin is unavoidable. Good! If I'm living in China for a year, it's for an authentic experience. However, let me just discreetly mention air pollution before moving swiftly on...

I can choose from the following regions: Beijing, Chongqing, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, Shanghai, Guizhou and Guangdong.

I am particularly attracted to Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Chongqing. The first due to gorgeous scenery and the last one for it's spicy food. I've read that people are discouraged from Chongqing as Sichuanese is more prevalent.

I don't think the ZH SH CH to Z S C shift would bother me too much. Just having the opportunity to practise Mandarin and breath air which isn't completely toxic are my priorities.

Feel free to add any info to advise me. Explain it like I'm 5 ...wrong sub, I know...

What's the best way to revise grammar patterns?

I'm currently in China studying Chinese at a university here, and while I'm really enjoying my classes I find that we cover several grammar points a day. I'm around HSK4-5 and I'm a little overwhelmed with trying to remember the nuances of every construction.

I was thinking of making an Anki deck with grammar points and practicing making sentences from that, but I'm a little worried that will get boring and might also reinforce bad or incorrect habits. What are some of your strategies for revising grammar patterns?

For those of you that watch TV/movies in Chinese, in general, how accurate are the captions?

If you have to give it an accuracy rating of 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100% what would you give? Just want to get an idea of the accuracy of the captions. I get it that it might depend if mainland, Taiwanese, Hong Kongense (obviously canto changes things). Just wondering in general about its accuracy since sometimes I am listening to a show and it doesn't quite match what I am reading (of course, this could be due to my untrained ear). Just wondering.

Do you ever feel slightly ashamed when other people find out you're involved with the Chinese language/culture?

Touchy topic, but basically what I want to ask is: do you ever feel like you have to hide a part of yourself in public? Sometimes I intentionally hide the fact that I speak Chinese or that I'm very involved in the culture, simply because there are negative stereotypes revolving around Chinese society. (I want to clarify that, even though I'm not a native Chinese, I grew up partly surrounded by the language and the people.)

I have seen similar, almost cliche, reddit posts about minority Americans being "ashamed" of their heritage, if you know what I mean. Anyways, it's a similar feeling. It's as if you want to blend in with everyone, but if the majority finds out you're so involved with Chinese, then all of a sudden you don't fit in with the majority. Further, there's a stereotype that a sub-population of the non-native Chinese speaking population can be described as LBH, yellow-fever, banana, weirdo or other slurs like that. Don't get me wrong: I love the Chinese lang/cult, but it's just the negative stereotypes that loom around.

So, sometimes I feel like, in order to avoid being judged, I should not talk about this passion I have for Chinese lang/cult. But I feel like that's not a healthy mentality to have.

I'm curious as to what other people's perspectives/attitudes are.
