Merged characters

For two years now I’ve been studying a bit of simplified Chinese by myself. And now I’m transitioning to studying both simplified and traditional characters, which is surprisingly fun and interesting. But there’s one part that confuses me and that’s the merged characters. I just discovered about it yesterday as I learnt 裡. I thought the definition was a bit lacking, so I looked it up and learned that 裡 and 里 were merged into 里. I also learned about many others like 麵 and 面 merging into 面, 後 and 后 merging into 后, 氣 and 气 merging into 气. I found this source:source, but I would like to find something more in-depth. I feel it’s hard to find much information about this topic. I still don’t know the purpose old 气, for instance. Couldn’t find it even in pleco.

So if anyone has a good source on this topic, I would be immensely grateful.

谢谢
