Anki plugin for modifying decks
Hi everyone,
I spent some time creating a plugin for anki that I hope to continue adding to on user requests to aid in configuring anki decks for Chinese learning.
There's a bunch of really good Chinese decks available for users, but often new cards are not presented in a desirable order, or they contain more content than you currently want to focus on.
This plugin tries to address this issue by allowing you to sort decks by character frequency, suspend based on HSK levels, has support to help with the comprehensive RSH deck, and I have a few more ideas to come.
Please let me know what you think or just if you find this useful.

Question about "The Lady in the Painting" traditional character version/differences in vocab usage?
I apologize for the wordy title, but I'm not really sure how to phrase this question. Basically, I have a Chinese reader of The Lady in the Painting written with traditional characters, but some of the vocab used is confusing to me.
For example, I thought the traditional character for 里 was 裡 and for 没 was 沒, but in this story it uses 家裏 for 家里 and 没有 instead of 沒有. (For context, the sentences are: 他没有哥哥,没有弟弟 and 家裏就是他一個人). There are also some differences in vocabulary from what I've learned so far, like using 外頭 instead of 外面/外边 like I'm used to seeing. (For context, the sentence is: 他的家在城外頭). There are also some other vocab differences, like 一塊兒 vs. 一起, 應當 vs. 应该, 大夫 vs. 医生, etc.
I don't know a lot about how vocab varies by region in China/Mandarin speaking regions, but I assume these differences I'm seeing could be chalked up to something like that. However, I'm not sure how to figure out what region this vocab comes from, or how to figure out when using words like these would be appropriate. If anyone could offer explanations, or point me to a source of information, or even suggest key words to google, I would really appreciate it.
谢谢你们帮助我!

Best approach for a complete beginner
Looking for suggestions about how to learn Chinese.
I’m a native English speaker, 55 years old, very busy professional with not a ton of unclaimed time on my hands.
Starting this year, I will be working with some colleagues in Shanghai. If things go well, I would be traveling frequently to China in 2020.
I would like to start learning Chinese so that: a) I won’t feel completely lost when traveling, and b) to show respect to my future collaborators.

Method for Practicing Tones
大家好,
Recently I was trying to come up with some methods to help me remember tones that I am consistently forgetting. What I came up with uses the “memory palace” or Method of Loci, except rather than imagining the characters in different places, I would actually print out characters of each of the four tones and separately post those on the wall in four different rooms in my house. That way, I could more easily remember that I had seen or studied a character in one particular place associated with a specific tone.
Obvious drawbacks are that you are probably limited in how many characters you could be studying at the same time in this way before they all start to run together. But I think just for the set I’m having trouble with, it would do.
Keep in mind, I typically learn tones best in words (as I’ve seen others commonly mention as well) and have relied on that technique primarily while reading (with LingQ) but I plan to use this method specifically for tones that are still having trouble sticking.
Anyone have thoughts on this idea or have any other suggestions of things you’ve tried successfully to help tones stick? 谢谢大家

Hello! I am an American high school sophomore looking for a fluent Mandarin speaker who would be willing to WeChat with me for practice. Kind like a pen pal I suppose. I have not taken a formal test, but I believe I am somewhere around HSK level 3. DM me if you are willing! Thank you so much!
PS: the reason I am not typing in Chinese is because the device I am currently on does not have a mandarin keyboard.

Is the retroflex (upward tounge) with ZH, CH, and SH initials mainted through the finals?
I've recently learned that I've been pronouncing all of my ZH, CH, and SH wrong, and have started practicing the retroflex (where your tounge is supposed to be curled upwards towards the roof of your mouth).
Is the retroflex tounge position maintained only while making the initial sound, or is it also maintained for the entire duration of the syllable, i.e., while making the final sound also?
For example, take 帅, shuai4
. If you hold the retroflex for the full duration of this word, it sounds different than if you release the retroflex just after the u
.

Yellow bridge “similar sounding words” feature good for homophones?
I am beginning to study Classical Chinese and I am looking for a good resource that links homophones together.
I want this because I want to be able to enjoy when authors purposely play with homophones to pack more meaning into the text.
At the same time I want to make sure they are true homophones and not words that just sound similar to an ear that isn’t able to differentiate the tones.

Any help with phrases for writing essays?
大家好!
I've been studying Chinese for several years now at college, but find it nearly impossible to locate any resources for writing essays. I asked my tutor, but he did not provide much help.
I'm looking for phrases that Chinese people would use in their essay writing, examples are:
- 'This essay is about the topic of...'
- 'In this essay, I will discuss...'
- To conclude...'
- 'Overall...'
- 'As well as X... I'd also like to consider Y'
- 'I will argue that...'
These are just examples, as I'm not looking for direct translations, any other phrases/expressions that could be used in essays would equally be appreciated!
I have tried to look them up in a dictionary myself, but tend to get conflicting phrases, I'd appreciate if I got a bit of help from reddit to point me in the right direction.
谢谢你们!

HSK level 3 and 4 in a year
Im from New Zealand so theres only 2 opportunities to take HSK exams in the year. I am wanting to take level 3 in April and level 4 in october. I have passed level 1 and 2 but I had lost my motivation to study Chinese in my free time. I had been taking Chinese for 3-4 years in high school but I never studied. So far I have relied on pinyin too much and I can probably read 30-50 characters maybe less. I went to China in 2017 which inspired me for a short while because I wanted to study there. And I went to China this year 2018 because I was awarded a scholarship that I really didn't deserve. Based on every other student that had been awarded the same scholarship my Chinese was by far the worst I couldn't converse with Chinese people and i even forgot what hungry in Chinese was. But after going again and making new friends it has inspired me and I would like to be able to study with one of the people on the trip. I am wanting to study at Beijing normal university or fudan university but I still have a long way to go. The trip has given me a lot motivation to study and has brought my love back for Chinese and has reminded me of why I want to study there. I would like to know the most efficient ways to learning how to read and write hanzi so far I am reading stuff that's for exams in new Zealand secondary schooling which is fairly basic but there's a lot of grammar and characters I still don't understand. I also bought some Chinese books that also have English translation but I think they're beyond my level. I'm also currently taking a gap year while working part time atm so I have a lot of free time.
TL;DR I need to study for hsk level 4 by October I have been studying Chinese for 4 years St school but I never studied I have passed hsk level 2 and I can only read 30-50 characters. Any tips on learning how to write and read hanzi. Half of what's up there is a sob story.

When to move on to the next line when writing
Are there any guidelines as to when you should move on to the next line when writing hanzi? Like should you keep verb-object constructions together as much as possible? Another example would be when I feel awkward separating 的 from the preceding noun or clause or whatever because I feel like that's separating the 's when writing the possessive form in English. Or does it not matter at all?

Best language school/university to study Chinese
I'm probably moving to Beijing for the second semester of my gap year and would like to know what the best language school/university with the best teachers is.
I'm looking to get 30 hours of one-on-one lessons each week. Hutong School is very close to where I will live, but I don't know if they have amazing teachers. My uncle is also checking with BLCU if they could arrange a teacher for me, but when I searched online, I saw that BLCU doesn't really stand out apparently?
Anyways, I would like to know if some of you have experience in one-on-one lessons in Beijing or know the best school with the best teachers.

Zero knowledge:(
Hello, I am a complete beginner in Chinese and have zero knowledge of the Chinese language. I have been studying Korean for a few years now and feel that I am ready to start learning something new alongside it. After much research I decided Chinese would suit me the most as my next language to pick up, however, I have no idea of good learning resources and would love suggestions of good, cheap (or free) resources. Thanks :)

Am Chinese and uses the language since birth but still gets a C, help
This is a repost as I posted in r/Chinese but two subs seem to share the same purpose so why not post in two of them?
I want to clarify I only use Cantonese to speak with my family so I am not generally good at Chinese when it comes to vocabulary.
Firstly, Is there a good thesaurus for Chinese? I want to increase my vocabulary with more advanced phrases and words, no matter how pretentious it sounds, I want a reliable dictionary and thesaurus but I can't find one.
Secondly, Is there a platform for me to learn old poetic Chinese? The equivalent of Shakespearean English in Chinese, for instance 汝=you instead of 你.
Thank you!

Did I get insulted? ”你不好“ [ni bu hao]
I just ran into a situation and I'm trying to understand what was said to me -- in our shared office building there is a chinese woman, and I passed her and she looked right at me and said "你不好“ (Ni bu hao) and then kept walking by me. She does not know I speak (very little) chinese.
Something felt off about it - felt insulting... researching a direct translation "You are no good" and I've also seen some colloquial translations as "you suck" online - but before I assumed the worst, thought I'd ask for some input on what was said to me.

Vertical writing tips/help
I know, I know, and I've heard all my mainland Chinese friends say that it's not necessary to write vertically because not everyone does and everyone writes horizontally, but I'm dedicated to knowing the traditional vertical way.
Anyways, whenever I write vertically I have this problem where some characters appear to be longer than others. In other words, the characters are always in unequal length. So what are some ways I could improve my writing vertically?

所 and 者 in 文言文
I’m taking 文言文(一)this semester and one part I’m struggling with in preparation of the final is 所.
I do understand 所 can make verbs act like nouns.
我所吃的菜都很新鮮。 All the vegetables which I eat are fresh.
But I remember teacher briefly going over that when 所 and 者 are in the same sentence to ignore one or both of them. Or I’m supposed to ignore 所 unless there’s a 者. I didn’t quite get her explanation.
Also, do any other characters or words have this same effect on 所 where I should ignore them?
您們幫我大忙、感謝🙏

Where to find Chinese movies with only Mandarin subtitles
Hello,
Does anyone know where to find Chinese movies with mandarin subtitles? I have watched every movie on Amazon Prime that fits the bill. They can’t have English subtitles or it takes away from learning naturally. I am having an extremely hard time finding any website online. Preferably looking for some app on a smart tv but I can download on a laptop and stick on a usb if necessary.
Also, if you made it this far, please recommend some Chinese movies that are worth watching. Always looking for that too.
Thank you !

There a frequency lists for Mandarin radicals, characters, and words, but are there frequency lists for grammar points?
I'm curious because it seems like A1 and A2 levels are easier rather than more frequent. Some things like idiomatic expressions, slang, and concepts that require a bit more nuance may come up more often.
I ask because I'm having trouble learning how to "think in Chinese," talking to people in Tandem or WeChat, I always have to look things up which of course gives me an English translation, which gets me thinking in terms of English structure and thus clunky translations that don't work literally.

Language school in China for recent high school graduate?
I'm a recent high school graduate looking at taking a gap year before uni to learn Chinese in China.
I'm Chinese but I was raised overseas so I'm able to hold basic conversation and understand every day topics, but can barely read and write. I mainly want to improve my Chinese so I can properly communicate with my family without that awkward language barrier.
I was wondering if anyone here had any reccomendations for programs that: • are long term (around 9 to 10 months) • preferably in Shanghai • can cater to my ABC language ability • offers accommodation • have younger students (one of my biggest concerns is having no friends, since I hear that a lot of students at these schools are considerably older) • programs that have chances to do volunteer work would be great as well!
I'm currently looking closely at Hutong School in Shanghai as well, does anyone here have much experience with them?
Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated! :)

Why can't kids play on the stairs?

Want to start studying Chinese in college after a two year language hiatus.
So I started off going to a community college and am going to finish my Associate's at the end of this semester.
I took Chinese for five years starting in eighth grade all throughout high school, and ended up in AP Chinese my senior year, took the AP test (unfortunately didn't pass it) and even got to go on an exchange trip to 广州 and 北京.
Once I transfer to my four year University I plan to take Chinese my last two years, as I want to minor in it.
I want to try and take this language proficiency test that they offer where if you pass it, you can potentially opt out of the beginning level class and be placed in one that is more geared towards your language level so that you're not starting from scratch.
However, I am worried that I'm not going to pass it since I have essentially taken a two year hiatus from the language and I don't know how much vocabulary or written script I've maintained during that break in learning.
Can anyone suggest a way for me to sort of test my own knowledge, or any online resources or apps that will help get me back into the groove of learning Chinese? I've never self studied before, but I loved learning 汉子 and the vocabulary and seeing myself be able to translate sentences in my head from English into Chinese.
Also as an aside, I really wish I had found this sub in high school because I've always been so enamored by the language and this would have been such a helpful and intriguing resource for me!

Help using 裡(面)for location sentences
The textbook that I’m using says the 裡(面) is needed after a common noun when making location sentences like: 他在房子裡, and isn’t needed with proper names like: 他在美國. However I have seen sentences with common nouns that don’t include the 裡, for example: 他在學校 or 他在圖書館. Are these exceptions to the rule or am I missing something? Thank you all!
