Is the retroflex (upward tounge) with ZH, CH, and SH initials mainted through the finals?

I've recently learned that I've been pronouncing all of my ZH, CH, and SH wrong, and have started practicing the retroflex (where your tounge is supposed to be curled upwards towards the roof of your mouth).

Is the retroflex tounge position maintained only while making the initial sound, or is it also maintained for the entire duration of the syllable, i.e., while making the final sound also?

For example, take 帅, shuai4. If you hold the retroflex for the full duration of this word, it sounds different than if you release the retroflex just after the u.
