Back with a couple of YouTube channel recommendation that's both entertaining and mixes a good amount of English and Chinese, I think
Hello.
Two members from 世界青年说 or A Bright World have created a channel called MYBY孟言布语. Their videos seems to have subtitles in both English and Chinese. And, at least to my ears, they speak awesome Chinese. So, this isn't too shabby of practicing your Chinese while enjoying some Western sense of humor.
Ychina is another recommendation. Their videos are mostly interviews. The levels of Chinese spoken by interviewees varies. But, they also provide subtitles in both languages. And it's not a bad idea to get used to people from different countries speaking in Chinese because there really are many non-Chinese people who speak Chinese and their level of Chinese varies.
I hope you enjoy them. I've been wasting good amount of time watching these videos lately.
Have fun!

What do you set your Leach Threshold to in Anki?
I use the default which is set to 8 in my Anki. I recevied my first leach today, and I was surprised as I didn't realize I was so bad at the character. I wonder if I should lower my leach threshold so I can be notified earlier.
Incidentally, is there a way to browse through a deck, and order it by the number of lapses, such that I can identify those notes that I am worse at?

Do you ever feel like hanzi hold you back?
I've been learning chinese a little while now and I think km slowly getting better and memorizing the hanzi, but I definitely struggle to write them from memory as of now.
With a language like Korean that has an alphabet you can start writing almost right away.
So I was wondering, does this ever hinder you? If you wanted to write a grocery list, or a quick note, or something like that but you wanted to write it in Chinese for practice, for me I wouldn't be able to do it (yet) but a Korean learner would have no problem.
Is this only a beginner problem or is it just part of the challenge of learning chinese?
Thanks!

How can I make the most of studying in Beijing?
Like the title says I'm currently studying abroad in China for the summer and want to take full advantage of all the opportunities here for learning Chinese. (For reference Ive studied for two years thus far but I kind of slacked off for the past year because of other classes/work)
Ive made friends with the people in my program, but we're all English speakers and pretty much only speak English with each other.
I have Chinese class 20 hours a week, two language partners (someone learning English), and a tutor. And that's all awesome although I have been speaking mostly English with my language partners because they speak Chinese so quickly and our conversations only last in English.
So does anyone either from Beijing or that has studied in Beijing have any advice on how else I can improve my Chinese? Like where good places are to practice or how I should be talking with my language partners. It's only been a little while so far, but I feel like I haven't gotten much better and I'm afraid the trip won't have been as worth as much as I originally thought it would be.

Meanwhile, our school arranges characteristic cultural, scientific and recreational activities, including day-trips, social events and weekends away. We hope we have the pleasure of welcoming you to our College! Learn How to Speak Mandarin ChineseThe first step is to grasp the useful basic knowledge of pronunciation. It includes: First, pronouncing the consonants and the vowels correctly, which is the basis for learning Mandarin Chinese well. Second, reading common words, this is a shortcut to learn Mandarin well. In modern Chinese, there are 2500 commonly used characters and 1000 sub-commonly used characters, their use frequency accounts 99.48% among all Chinese characters, so we can basically achieve the standard pronunciation and recitation of the demand in Mandarin as long as we grasp the standard pronunciation of the commonly used characters and the sub-commonly used characters. The second step is to know the differences between local dialect and Mandarin. First, we should grasp the standard pronunciation of the commonly used characters and the sub-commonly used characters, and then "environmental memorize" the words easy to be read wrong in the detailed language environment. Through reading and memorizing some famous works of ancient and modern, Chinese and foreign, can effectively help the learners to remember the standard pronunciation of these words for a long time, and can also improve the cultivation in other aspects. At the same time, we should frequently listen to the radio, tape, watch TV and listen to the conversations between the native speakers. Using these "modernization" methods to create a special small environment for yourself to learn Mandarin, and constantly revise our irregular pronunciation. The third step is to practice more and speak more. More practice and more speaking is the most important way to speak Chinese language well. The fourth step is to actively participate in the internship of artistic language. Through reciting, speaking, telling stories and other artistic language learning, practice and internship, cultivate and further strengthen your interests in Mandarin and exercise the feeling of speaking Mandarin Chinese. Chinese language partners
So Ive been self learning Chinese for about a year. I have tried multiple times to establish language partner relationships with people, mostly via hello talk and wechat. I live in Sydney, Australia so there's literally hundreds of thousands of native chinese speakers, and a lot of them are international students.
I have been almost entirely unsuccessful as all the language partners are 100% interested in english speaking and 2% interested in chinese speaking. I end up becoming a regular friend (and sounding board for complaining!), and we end up not focusing on study.
Secondly I seem to only attract Male language partners, who after a short time start being overly attached, complimentary and give me gifts. I'm married and I tell them so, but it doesn't seem to sink in. I end up with these men just not meeting them again, which is frustrating.
So im asking the sub- how can i better ask for help/ a language study relationship and ward off people who are not suitable/have alterior motives? What experience do other people have with language partners?

Bridging the Gap: From Chinese Classroom to Speaking Chinese in China
It will only take 9 minutes to read this post!
Even if you’ve had Chinese lessons to prepare you for coming to China, there’s one thing these classes probably didn’t prepare you for: the various accents, dialects and local slang that REAL Chinese speakers use day-to-day. But don’t panic! It was always going to be different, and there are ways for you to bridge the gap between your Chinese classes back home and the Chinese spoken in China.
Below are some actionable ways for you to improve your listening skills with native speakers in China:
Start Listening. No, I mean REALLY listening
The first thing you’re probably going to have to do is adjust your hearing to all of these new sounds. You’re going to hear lots of repetitive sounds including ‘a’s, ‘mm’s and ‘那个‘s you might have problems focusing on anything else. However, once you open your ears, you ‘ll start to hear words and phrases that you’ve learned back home.
An old Chinese teacher of mine once advised me not to fixate on the small filler words I didn’t know, and try and listen to the sentence as a whole. I had a terrible habit of focusing on one small word and then being unable to follow or participate in a conversation!
If you’re teaching Chinese in China, listen to your students, especially if you’re working in a kindergarten or primary school. This is a great opportunity to learn some basic vocabulary, including food and simple verbs. When I was teaching, I often asked my teachers what my students were talking about, and yes, it was often about weird kid stuff, but a chance to learn, nonetheless.
Speak As Often As You Can
Speak in the grocery store. Speak in the coffee shop. Ask the person at the other table if you can take that chair. You need to step out of your comfort zone, and just speak. I know, I know, it’s easier said than done.
To prepare yourself, use a dictionary app on your phone to check our the word you might need.
You want to ask the assistant in the supermarket where the tomatoes are. Oh, shoot. how do you say tomatoes again…? Check out the word in your dictionary before going to the assistant, listen to the audio so you know how to pronounce it, construct your sentence, then ask your question!
Talk To Yourself
I often have conversations in my head before I have to deal with something that I don’t like, such as making a phone call or complaining (nooooo!). You might want to do this in the privacy of your own home, but why not speak out your sentences to practice those sentence patterns and pronunciation.
Go a step further and record yourself speaking. Trust me, before we started the podcast, hearing my own voice was nightmare-ish, but once you do it a few times, it gets much easier. Use your own recordings in Chinese to help you correct your Chinese grammar and pronunciation.
Speak Like a Child
In his book, The Third Ear, Chris Lonsdale recommends focusing on the words you do have to communicate, just like children do. Instead of trying to construct complex sentences, stick to what you do know to get your point across. Furthermore, in his TEDx Talk, Lonsdale states that if you know 10 nouns, 10 adjectives and 10 verbs, you can create 1000 different phrases!
Wait for the Correct Word
I found this great piece of advice from Hacking Chinese, that suggests you wait for the other person to provide a word that you’re missing. This will not only help you fill in the missing vocabulary that you don’t have or have forgotten, but it can also help build confidence. Often enough, you can jump in after the other person has spoken and repeat the word as though you meant to say it all along!
Create Flashcards to Help Cement New Words
To help you remember those new words you learn whilst you’re out and about, make sure you create a flashcard straight away. If you’re using the Written Chinese Dictionary app or another flashcard app, you can search for the new word and simply add to a list you’re compiling.
I have several lists that I use, such as ‘Useful Words to Learn’ which holds words that people have taught me. I also keep a food list and a dog list so that I can converse with my fellow dog owners on our evening meetings.
Once you have time to study, listen to the audio for each word and try and create a sentence using it (yes, speak it out loud!).
Create a ‘Toolbox’ of Sentence Patterns
You may have already done this whilst studying with a teacher, but compiling and referring back to sentence patterns can be extremely useful for your spoken Chinese.
Here are several ‘sentence pattern’ lists to take a look at:
- 10 Essential Chinese Sentence Patterns Every Beginner Should Know
- 18 Intermediate Chinese Sentence Patterns You Need to Learn
Use Mandarin HQ’s Real Spoken Chinese Vault
Mandarin HQ’s Real Spoken Chinese Vault is a database of videos to teach you everyday vocabulary and phrases that are actually useful! So many Chinese textbooks out there have their limitations, because they teach us to speak very formulaically, with sometimes formal and outdated words. In the Real Spoken Chinese videos, you’ll hear REAL native speakers, using their own dialects and own way of speaking to help you recognize differences between Chinese speakers and ways of asking the same question (or providing an answer) in many ways.
For example, in one of the videos, the speakers ask the question “When is your birthday?”, in their own way. There isn’t just one way to ask this question, and in this situation, there are two common phrases:
- 你 的 生 日 是 几 月 几 号?
- 你 的 生 日 是 什 么 时 候?
Other examples may have 3 or 4 different ways to ask or respond to a question, such as greeting someone in the morning or asking how someone is doing.
These videos are aimed to help ‘bridge’ the gap between classroom lessons and what it’s like to communicate with a real-life person in Chinese.
Mandarin HQ is offering Written Chinese readers a special offer to unlock ALL the videos, quizzes, audio and detailed transcripts in the Real Spoken Chinese Vault. You’ll have access to every single lesson from Beginner to Intermediate FOREVER!
Sound interesting? You can learn more about the Real Spoken Chinese Vault here.
Watch TV Shows and Listen to Audio
Watching Chinese TV shows can be a great way to listen to native speakers communicate. At first, it may just sound like white noise, but you’ll soon begin to hear phrases you know. Watching TV you can also gain a lot from context and learn based on what the characters are doing and saying. Is there a word or phrase you’re unsure of? Make a note of it and search in a dictionary afterwards. Since you’re most likely streaming, you can pause your show and check the subtitles for the characters.
Watching TV and listening to radio and podcasts is also useful for listening to different dialects. The home of Written Chinese, Shenzhen is a melting pot of accents and dialects from Chinese people all over the country and at first, it can be tricky to understand some of the thicker accents!
If you’re watching TV as a tool to improve your Chinese, you might want to stay away from period dramas and stick with modern sitcoms, dramas and game shows where the language used is more useful. Furthermore, to get the most of a show, you need to watch it several times, so sticking with shorter half-hour length shows would be more beneficial and easier to digest.

This Pork and Chicken Stock has appeared once already on the blog––in my Shanghai Wonton Soup post. Clear, delicious […]

Was 言 not fully simplified to 讠or am I mistaken?
I was under the impression that the traditional radical 言 was simplified to 讠. However, 言 apparently is it's own character in simplified. Moreover, it appears as a radical in many characters, notably 信. Yet 讠appears as a radical in many characters, like 语.
Am I incorrect or is there an inconsistency? If it is an inconsistency, is this an unusual exception or can this sort of thing happen more often?

At what point did you start to understand Chinese media?
大家好! I’ve been studying Chinese as a hobby for a short while now. I know, and can comfortably use, the vocab in HSK1 and have a solid grasp on HSK2. I don’t expect to understand media at this point, but am curious about others experiences.
At what point in your learning of Chinese did you start to understand Chinese media?
Do you think your understanding of media can be tied to a HSK level, or more to do with time spend absorbing content as best possible?
I do have to say, it is exciting when you understand a short sentence in a real world context like a news article.

What’s the Difference Between 有点儿 youdianr & 一点儿 yidianr?
It will only take 5 minutes to read this post!
If you don’t have time to read the article right now, you can just get your What’s the difference between 有点儿 and 一点儿? PDF and read it later!
有点儿 (yǒu diǎnr) and 一点儿 (yī diǎnr) basically both mean the same thing: ‘a little’. The key thing is to learn how to use them correctly in a sentence. Below, I’ll explain the basics of using 有点儿 and 一点儿.
First, I’d like to look at the 点 character and its meaning. The character’s general meaning is ‘point’, ‘dot’ or ‘spot’ and is used in many circumstances including to tell the time as well as to order food (点菜 – diǎn cài).
The traditional character 點 includes the radical component for black: 黑 (hēi). The remaining radicals 口 (kǒu) referring to the mouth and 卜 (bǔ) meaning ‘to divine’ suggests an ‘ oral interpretation’ of something which then ‘points’ to the ‘black’ unknown.
You can share how you remember the 点 character on the details page on the Living Online Dictionary!
有点儿 (yǒu diǎnr)
1. 有点儿 + adjective
When 有点儿 is used with an adjective it creates a negative situation to describe something you don’t like.
Using 有点儿 is not only a more polite way to speak in an unpleasant situation, but it makes an angry or upset kind of emotion seem less aggressive, putting the listener at ease without lessening the feeling. It can also be used to create sympathy towards the speaker.
For example:
我是有点儿累。(wǒ shì yǒu diǎnr lèi.) I’m a bit tired.
这件衣服有点儿贵。 (zhè jiàn yī fu yǒu diǎnr guì.) The clothes are a little expensive.
2. 有点儿 + verb
Most often, when a verb is used with 有点儿 it suggests an emotional feeling such as hate, worry or like.
For Example:
我有点儿担心他。(wǒ yǒu diǎnr dān xīn tā) I’m a little worried about him.
我有点儿喜欢他,可是他太自大了。(wǒ yǒu diǎnr xǐ huan tā, kě shì tā tài zì dà le.) I like him in a way, but he is arrogant.
3. 有点儿 + noun
一点儿 works as measure words when used with a noun. So when 有点儿 is used with a noun, it is actually short for 有一点儿. In this situation, 有 predicates the sentence.
For Example:
冰箱里还有点儿牛奶。(bīng xiāng lǐ hái yǒu diǎnr niú nǎi.) There’s a little bit of milk in the fridge.
我对这部电影有点印象。(wǒ duì zhè bù diàn yǐng yǒu diǎn yìn xiàng.) I have a vague recollection of that movie
4. 有点儿+ 不/没
When negating 有点儿 you can use either 不 or 没 afterwards.
Sentence pattern: 有点儿 + 不
For example:
我有点儿不喜欢这首歌了。(wǒ yǒu diǎn bù xǐ huan zhè shǒu gē le.) I didn’t like the song very much.
一点儿 (yī diǎnr)
1. adjective + 一点儿, adjective + 一点儿 + 了, adjective + 了 + 一点儿
一点儿 is more frequently used to express optimism or to request something. The adjective used is usually a positive one.
For example:
你看起来比昨天好一点儿了。(nǐ kàn qǐ lái bǐ zuó tiān hǎo yī diǎnr le.) You look a little better than you did yesterday.
她的打字速度可以再快了一点儿。(tā de dǎ zì sù dù kě yǐ zài kuài le yī diǎnr.) Her typing speed could be a little faster.
2. Verb + 一点儿
The verbs used before 一点儿 are usually common verbs such as do, make or look.
For example:
他什么运动都懂一点儿,但是都不精通。(tā shén me yùn dòng yùn dōu dǒng yī diǎnr, dàn shì dōu bù jīng tōng.) He knows a bit about every sport, but isn’t good at any.
她带的现金已经足够了,你只需要再给一点儿就行了。 (tā dài de xiàn jīn yǐ jīng zú gòu le, nǐ zhǐ xū yào zài gěi yī diǎnr jiù xíng le. She has enough cash with her, you only need to give a little more.
3. 一点儿 + noun
When 一点儿 is combined with a noun, it acts like a measure word.
For example:
她在减肥,所以一点儿肉都不敢吃。(tā zài jiǎn féi, suǒ yǐ yī diǎnr ròu dōu bù gǎn chī.) She’s on a diet, so she daren’t eat any meat.
他今天喝了一点儿酒。(tā jīn tiān hē le yī diǎnr jiǔ.) He drank a little wine today.
4. 一点儿 + 都/也 +不
Using 一点儿都不 or 一点儿也不 creates a complete negation of the sentence and means ‘not at all’.
For example:
我一点儿都不喜欢这首歌。 (wǒ yī diǎnr dōu bù xǐ huan zhè shǒu gē.) I don’t like this song at all.
