Chinese language partners

So Ive been self learning Chinese for about a year. I have tried multiple times to establish language partner relationships with people, mostly via hello talk and wechat. I live in Sydney, Australia so there's literally hundreds of thousands of native chinese speakers, and a lot of them are international students.

I have been almost entirely unsuccessful as all the language partners are 100% interested in english speaking and 2% interested in chinese speaking. I end up becoming a regular friend (and sounding board for complaining!), and we end up not focusing on study.

Secondly I seem to only attract Male language partners, who after a short time start being overly attached, complimentary and give me gifts. I'm married and I tell them so, but it doesn't seem to sink in. I end up with these men just not meeting them again, which is frustrating.

So im asking the sub- how can i better ask for help/ a language study relationship and ward off people who are not suitable/have alterior motives? What experience do other people have with language partners?
