I've been studying the standard Beijing dialect (don't know the actual Chinese term) for about a year now, and I'm at a pretty solid HSK2-3 level based on my Chairman's Bao comprehension. My gf's family speaks Shanghainese and some of their other relatives speak some other dialect that my gf can understand, but compares to an American trying to understand someone with a heavy Scottish accent. So how easy is it for Chinese learners to pick up and understand other dialects once you've mastered one, and is it even worth attempting?
