Shepherd’s Purse Tofu Soup
Shepherd’s Purse Tofu Soup is a very well-known and popular soup in Shanghai. This special vegetable is wonderfully fragrant, with a unique flavor that you may know well from our Pork and Shepherd’s Purse (Ji Cai) Dumplings. You might also have seen jì cài (荠菜) in the freezer section of a well-stocked Chinese grocery store. If […]

tone memorizing method that I wish I’d considered sooner
despite studying for years now, and having the pronunciation of the tones down, my memory really doesn’t serve me when memorizing the tones of vocab that I see in writing before I actually hear it, but here’s my pneumonic method going forward.
As it turns out, in ancient times, tones arose to basically replace consonants that were lost off the ends of words. That got me thinking, what if instead of trying to memorize the tone as a tone, I memorized the tone as something more familiar to me as an English speaker. An underlying form, if you will.
So instead of getting confused over “歡,還,緩,換”, one might memorize these syllables as something like huan, huant, hualn, and huans, and just do the conversion in actual speech.
I figure it might help to do it this way since picturing an underlying form is more or less what allows English and french to have etymologically-based spelling.

HSK Marking System
Hi,
I am doing the HSK2 tomorrow and I am a bit confused about the scoring system. I have looked it up in google and this subreddit too but I am non the wiser.
Level 2 has 60 question (34+25) and 200 points. You need 120 to pass...
Any idea how the 200 points are broken down? Is it 50/50 listening/reading?
Thanks in advanced for the help.

Looking for a Chinese conversation partner.
I've been getting Chinese lessons via Skype for over a year, and have done my HSK1.
However, I don't have any Chinese-speaking people in my life, and would like to have some casual Chinese conversation on a regular basis.
I'm not after another teacher, just someone to chat to for a few minutes every day or two.
I've signed up to HelloTalk, but I don't think you can do realtime conversation there (can you?)
I've also just signed up to italki, waiting to hear back from a few people.
Are there any other language partner opportunities I should be aware of?

Is this an effective list of verbs (verbix)
Recently I found (this)[http://wiki.verbix.com/Verbs/ChineseMandarinVerbList] incredible verb list for Mandarin.
I would like to go ahead and learn it, but I'm skeptical of some of the verbs, such as 酤 "to deal in liquor". Are these verbs even used in common speech? I tried to use Google translate and write something like ”我酤了" and it failed to translate into anything comprehensible.
In short, are these verbs legitimate, or are they a a Google translate hack job that has been thrown together in a short amount of time.

Graded Readers between Mandarin Companion and real books?
By my count, the Mandarin Companion Level 2 and Chinese Breeze Level 2 books use less than 500 unique characters.
However, lots of the books in /r/Chinesebookclub use 2-3K unique characters!
Chinese Breeze levels 3 and 4 do not have ebooks, so I can't find out the number of unique characters (the books say 1100 "words" but I don't believe those are unique characters).
Are there graded readers, or even simple, real books, that contain only 1000-1500 unique characters?
If not, how do you guys jump from Mandarin Companion to novels, given that the general consensus in this subreddit is that extensive reading is better than flash cards?

I just found a gold mine of a listening practice resource
OK, I don't know where to begin. The above website is beyond amazing. This site (or rather, this business) aims to preserve Chinese dialects (and world languages in general) by having people from all over China submit their own recordings, whether they tell a story, a joke, or say whatever. Most of the audio recordings come with a script in Chinese. This is amazing for two reasons: 1) it preserves dialects, and 2) it's good listening practice for foreigners learning Chinese.
Click on map, choose region, choose dialect, or 官话 from a certain region, click on audio... it comes with script. Adjust your listening bandwidth by training in 普通话 or somewhat close to 普通话 from other regions, or learn about different dialects... keeps a good record of dialects for the ages to come as well. Amazing site.

Did anyone else here grow up with a semi Chinese environment but isn't very fluent? How did you get better at Mandarin?
Sorry if the title is poorly worded, I just found this sub now after lurking Reddit for some time. I've been wondering about this a lot because I've been wanting to get better at Mandarin but no idea where to start, because online resources I find are either too basic or too intermediate.
I'm Taiwanese who grew up in SE Asia, and go to Taiwan for a summer or winter almost every year. I also studied in a Taiwanese school in SE Asia, so almost all of my classmates were 華僑。Our Chinese education system was very similar to that of Taiwan, with 華語,綜合,and 數學。But that's the problem, they taught us those as if we were the same as the students in Taiwan, who speak Mandarin everyday and are exposed to it outside school. So we mostly just memorized things. At home we speak Hokkien and few Mandarin. So I can speak Mandarin and sound like a local as long as it's basic stuff but I can't really hold a conversation well, though I can usually understand fine. Usually.
My sentence construction is still terrible though. I'm getting to practice using things like 而已 and 反正 (not sure what they're called??) but I'm not very good at using them except on occasions when I'm exposed to enough Mandarin they come naturally. On instances where it's sudden it's like a language shock and my mind blanks out so I look like an idiot. I've been looking around on sentence constructions but I don't find much, especially in Traditional Chinese (I can't read simplified well and since I'm Taiwanese, and plan to live in Taiwan for a while in the future I really want to speak and read well)
If anyone has experience/advice for this kind of situation I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance :)

Chinese name?
As the title says, I want to have a Chinese name. I live in China and currently everyone calls me "Maria" because my real legal name is very long (I'm from Mexico). My co-workers suggested using 玛利亚 (mǎlìyà) but I don't particularly like it.
My surname is Munoz, so a character with a Mu sound would be nice. I though of using 木 (mù) as my surname because I like trees, but I don't know if it's actually a good family name.
However I have no idea about any given names that would go well with 木 except maybe a name with 花 (hua). Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Anyone know what 一寸长一寸强 means?
I was recently watched a TV show on Netflix (not worth watching tbh) and in it this phrase was mentioned.
The context was a male lead was able to get the last packet of chocolate off a supermarket shelf that a female lead couldn't reach and she was upset by this. The male lead was being rude to her and said that sentence to her.
Has anyone come across it before? I've searched on Baidu to look for explanations but they're coming across somewhat convoluted, which is frustrating because they also appear to be somewhat interesting too.

Foreign accents in chinese
My question is to any native speakers, how do you feel about foreign accents in mandarin. I dont mean in terms of how clearly you can understand them, but in terms of what the accent makes you think. For example in english a french accent might sound more romantic, a russian accent might sound more aggressive. Also are you able to tell what country a foreigner is from when they use mandarin based on their accent?

review my translation?
hi there! i translated the song "Washing Machine Heart" into Chinese for fun- would appreciate if y'all could help me with some things I might have used the incorrect verbs for, etc. here's the lyrics.
This is my translation:
折腾你的脏鞋在我的洗衣机心
宝宝轰它里面
我没有涂我的通常口红
我觉得也许我们吻今晚
宝宝你吻我已经吗,和
折腾你的脏鞋在我的洗衣机心
宝宝轰它里面
宝宝,虽然我的眼睛关闭
我知道谁你假装我是
我知道谁你假装我是
但是 do mi ti
为什么不是我
为什么不是我
do mi ti
为什么不是我
为什么不是我
do mi ti

I wasn't really sure how to translate "bang it up inside" either, so bear with me there.

Grammatical mistakes that convey someone being unintelligent in Chinese?
In English, there are certain grammatical mistakes that are used in shows and movies to convey that a character is unintelligent. An ogre or troll or brute might say "Me strong, you no strong.", and that sends a message to the audience that this character isn't very sharp. In Chinese, is there an equivalent of this? What grammatical mistakes are commonly used in Chinese to convey that a character is unintelligent?

For simplified characters, it seems to be 饕, but I guess there are more complicated 繁體字 that aren't too rare. I wouldn't count biáng, since that seems more like a marketing gag. I'm assuming something that's readable by the average university graduate.

Learning apps/resources with a male voice?
As a male, I'm trying to avoid the trap of getting used to speaking with female mannerisms, so I'm looking for decent beginner-to-intermediate apps/resources that have an audio component where a male voice is used.
I know Duolingo uses a male voice but the quality of the TTS is very average and the course itself isn't so great, so I was hoping to be able to find something better. The other three big mobile apps (LingoDeer, ChineseSkill and HelloChinese) all use a female voice, and additionally two of them sound like a child.
Any recommendations?
Mixed male/female is ok too (especially for listening practice), but I'd prefer to be mimicking a male voice as much as possible. I have already done all 5 levels of Pimsleur, which was mixed.

Being Direct in Chinese
When you travel or move to China, a little bit of culture shock (文化冲击 – wén huà chōng jí) is inevitable. I know I certainly experienced it when I first moved there, whether it was trying different food (silk worm larvae, anyone?), drinking baijiu (白酒 – bái jiǔ) for the first time (gross), or learning how to queue in China (hint – you don’t). One thing you’ll quickly learn about the people and the language in China is that they’re very direct. In this post I’ll try to help you understand a bit more about this element of Chinese language and culture as I discuss being direct in Chinese.
Short, Direct Language
To start with, Chinese can be a very direct language. You don’t need a lot to say a lot in China. A lot of the time, less is more when it comes to speaking in China. Here are a few examples of very short, direct phrases that you’ll often hear:
- Good/fine/OK (好 – hǎo)
- No/don’t have (没有 – méi yǒu)
- What’s going on?/What’s wrong? (什么事? – shén me shì)
- Where are you going? (去哪儿? – qù nǎ er)
- Not bad/OK/so-so (不错 – bù cuò)
When I first started studying Chinese, I learned that “Where are you going?” was translated as 你要去哪里? (nǐ yào qù nǎ lǐ). However, cab drivers always simply asked me “去哪儿?” No need for wasted energy on a few extra syllables in China!
When we see Chinese tour groups around the world (and they’re everywhere these days), I always joke with my wife that the only thing I hear the guide say is “Come, come, come! Good, good, good! Go, go, go!” (来, 来, 来! 好, 好, 好! 走, 走, 走! – lái, lái, lái! hǎo, hǎo, hǎo! zǒu, zǒu, zǒu!). You really can say so much with so little in China!
Another great example I can think of is being in a restaurant. People in most Western cultures will very politely wave their waiter down and say something like, “Excuse me, could we please take the check when you get a minute?” Why do we need to say so much, guys? In China, all you do is yell “Waiter! Check!” (服务员! 买单! – fú wù yuán! mǎi dān!). It may seem rude to you at first, but that’s just how things are done in China. It’s certainly much more efficient.
Over the years, I can’t tell you how many times I had someone tell me “Your Chinese is not bad” (你的中文还不错 – nǐ de zhōng wén hái bù cuò). It doesn’t sound like much of a compliment, but it is one in China. It never bothered me until now, as I currently teach English to Chinese students online. When parents give me 4/5 stars for a class and write “还不错” as a comment, I know they mean well and actually enjoyed the lesson. In their eyes, they’re giving me a good review. However, anything less than 5/5 actually hurts me and my chances of a raise. Cultural differences can be frustrating, can’t they?
Different Taboo Topics
Many Westerners who go to China are taken aback by how direct the people there can be. For example, in China it’s not considered rude to ask someone their age, man or woman. In the West, we’re often told not to ask a woman their age. However, in China, a very common question is “How old are you?” (你几岁了? – nǐ jǐ suì le/你多大? – nǐ duō dà). Even taxi drivers will ask you your age within minutes of meeting you!
Another topic that’s taboo in Western culture but not in China is your salary. It’s pretty much unheard of back home to straight up ask someone how much they get paid, but in China things are different. When I was an English teacher in China, I was constantly asked “How much is your salary?” (你的工资是多少?- nǐ de gōng zī shì duō shǎo?). The way I usually handled this was by simply responding with “Enough!” (够了 – gòu le). People didn’t get the answer they were looking for, but they certainly got a laugh!
People also aren’t shy about asking detailed questions about your home, car, phone, and how big/new/expensive they are. Especially in the big cities of China, people are obsessed with real estate. When I lived in Beijing, people would always ask me how many square meters my apartment was. I always told them “I don’t know and I don’t care” (我不知道, 我也不在乎 – wǒ bù zhī dào, wǒ yě bù zài hū). I understand why it’s a big deal to people there, but as a transient English teacher it really didn’t make a big difference to me.
Talking About Appearance
Growing up, I was always told not to openly talk about my classmates’ appearance, or anyone for that matter. In the US, it’s considered rude and quite mean to tell someone to their face that they’re fat, for example. Imagine my shock when I got to China and students in my 3rd grade class would point to one boy and say “He’s fat! (他很胖 – tā hěn pàng). I felt bad for the kid at first, until he laughed out loud and agreed.
On another occasion, an older student told me “You don’t have a lot of hair” (你没有很多头发 – nǐ méi yǒu hěn duō tóu fǎ). Yeah, thanks kid, I’m well aware of my male-pattern baldness. Should someone openly comment on your appearance in China, don’t take it too personally. It’s just not considered a big deal to do so there.
Rather than let this directness frustrate you, it’s best to just go with the flow and try to adapt. I came to enjoy being direct with my students and even random people who engaged me in conversation. I also had a good time joking around with them and not really giving them the answer they wanted, but engaging in a discussion anyways. Being direct is just a part of life in China, so do your best to embrace it. You may find that you actually end up experiencing a bit of reverse culture shock when you go back home. I know I did.
Do you have any experiences to share about directness in Chinese language and culture? We’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment below and tell us about it.

How to maintain my Chinese?
I have studied Chinese for a few years in school and now that it's over I find it hard to keep practicing and maintaining my current level of Chinese. Does anyone have any ideas for casual things I can do?

Study Setup (Anki)
I figured after making a screenshot for a comment in another thread; I might as well share my Anki setup. I use double screens during the day so the smaller one is dedicated to looking up anything I come across and don't know so I can add it to my deck. Wondering is anyone is doing anything similar. Cheers

Can someone translate “I don’t know I don’t speak Chinese” for me, please
I’m unsure of the correct way to write it out as I would want to have it the way Chinese people would read and write it themselves

Need experienced Chinese Tutor?
Hi there,
If you are interested in finding an experienced Chinese tutor to help you with Mandarin Chinese in all four skills (speaking, reading, listening, writing), please message me.
I have been teaching Mandarin Chinese to K-12 students(1st Grade to high school) in a public school district in the US for almost 5 years. I have seen many of my students starting from without any knowledge of Chinese language and culture to being able to communicate with me or each other in fully speaking/writing Chinese. The atmosphere I was able to create made them not afraid of making mistakes in or after class when speaking Chinese.
I would love to and sincerely hope to help you if you are in need of learning Chinese and definitely encourage you to try to use this language without being afraid of making mistakes. Leaning language should be fun, engaging and useful! I mostly teach my private lesson though Skype or Zoom, and I normally charge $35-50 per hour.
Please let me know if you are interested. Best luck!
Thank you.

Interested in creating a (Open source) Chinese proper noun dictionary
As the title, I'm planning on creating a Chinese proper noun dictionary, similar to JMnedict/ENAMDICT for Japanese, and which could complement CC-CEDICT in Pleco or whatever. Is there anyone else who might be interested in taking part?

How often do you rewind audio to make sure you understand what was said?
I am doing listening practice by watching the Chinese dubbed version of Avatar the Last Airbender, and on first watch I can understand maybe 50% of the speech. Would you say it is better to rewind and rewatch the sections I don't understand and try to pick out all the words until I understand the dialogue, or just keep watching and gradually learn as common words get repeated (from the first episode I was able to pick out the words for the avatar, and bending just through the natural repetition in the show). This is the method I use for practicing reading - recognizing the words that get repeated a lot and making sure I know those words. This is fine as long as you can understand the basic idea of what is happening in the story. Does this work for listening practice as well, or should I be rewinding and making sure I understand 100% of the speech in the show? I imagine that since I can't actually see the characters it would take my brain longer to notice something being repeated than while reading. Also this show doesn't have subtitles (at least that I can find) so that makes it harder to learn the parts I don't understand. I imagine a mixture of both rewinding and not worrying about parts I don't understand (only rewind the parts that I guess are important) is probably optimal, but I would love to hear about other people's strategies for watching tv shows or general listening practice.
