Graded Readers between Mandarin Companion and real books?

By my count, the Mandarin Companion Level 2 and Chinese Breeze Level 2 books use less than 500 unique characters.

However, lots of the books in /r/Chinesebookclub use 2-3K unique characters!

Chinese Breeze levels 3 and 4 do not have ebooks, so I can't find out the number of unique characters (the books say 1100 "words" but I don't believe those are unique characters).

Are there graded readers, or even simple, real books, that contain only 1000-1500 unique characters?

If not, how do you guys jump from Mandarin Companion to novels, given that the general consensus in this subreddit is that extensive reading is better than flash cards?
