Anyone ever tried Pandanese for learning Chinese radicals?

Hi! I just started learning Mandarin a few weeks ago and have been trying to self-study on my own. I joined the Discord ChineseLanguage server yesterday and found pandanese.com as a resource.

I've been using it in the past day and find it quite effective as it teaches you Chinese radicals through the use of mnemonics and spaced repetition system (SRS).

However, I was just wondering what you guys might think of it as a method of learning Chinese and its radicals effectively. I'm not entirely too sure if learning via mnemonics will actually help/is effective in learning Mandarin or how actually will the radicals aid me for when I start delving into the reading aspect of Mandarin if I don't even know what their pinyin is.

Apologies if my question is a little bit scrambled(?). I am still trying to get the hang of gelling everything together- pinyin, the 4 tones, radicals, simplified and traditional etc. You guys can check it out at pandanese.com and see how you like it. Take note it's not mobile responsive so far but I would definitely suggest some of you check it out when you have the time!

Thanks!

Learning Materials

Looking for learning materials to keep working on my Chinese. I'm currently at a level between HSK 4 and 5 I would say and am aiming to get to HSK 5 towards the end of the year.

I've worked through most of the Popup Chinese intermediate podcasts now (about 140) and am looking for some fresh material. I used to use Chinesepod but am a little skeptical right now.

Been watching native content as well, working through 家有儿女 at the moment.

Any thoughts on different listening materials I can use? Is Chinesepod really worth it? One of my qualms with it was that I usually speak to mainlanders and they would often pick me up on my word usage (口音 vs 腔)for example. I have very little money and am a student, which limits me in terms of what I can spend and is another big reason why I'm reluctant to pay the Chinesepod sub.

Cheers

How to ask about "when the next meetup" is?

What is a good Chinese phrasing for the noun "meetup" (e.g. I heard that there is a Chinese-practice meetup next week.)?

Also, how is asking when the next meetup is best phrased? My best attempt has been:

下次"meetup"是什么时候?

but I feel that this can definitely be improved...

My grammar still needs a lot of improvement, so any help would be greatly appriciated!

What's the actual different usage of 打算 and 计划?

When I lived in China, in class the teacher taught us that the former is a verb while the latter is a noun. However, I've noticed that it isn't that simple and they can both be used as nouns and verbs. Is there any rule about this? Can someone give some examples?

Vocabulary Jump

I have been studying Mandarin for a few years and am looking to significantly boost my vocabulary up from around 1700 words to 3,500 in a very short period(30'40 days). The original goal was to be able to for the most part to be able to comprehend Chinese television/films, boost general comprehension, and read more advanced day to day content such as the news in Chinese, but I soon realized I needed a much stronger foundation to actually do this. Are there any recommendations as to how I should learn the characters at a rapjd fast pace without simply forgetting them immediately after learning them. I am looking at around 40 characters a day (I will learn to write these new characters later) on Anki Droid, Also, I am working my way through the Hsk lists currently starting on hsk 5(Level wise I am probably at 4, but what I want to do is set the framework to improve rapidly by knowing a fluency level number of characters) are there any sources besides hsk for vocabulary that I should look towards for vocabulary?

My opinion is that Pleco is the lord and savior of all Chinese dictionary software, but I could be wrong. There are certainly some drawbacks (cough cough- no desktop version) but I want to hear what you all think. I have been using the free version of their flashcard system for a bit, but I know everyone seems to prefer Anki. Why? If there is a better system out there, I'll use that instead, so convince me. Or not.

Also, if you guys haven't heard of Pleco, it's a Chinese dictionary app with lots of other features, too. Check it out.

Can anyone help me find the name of this Taiwanese Mandarin learners book?

In high school my Mandarin teacher showed me a small book which was all in Traditional Mandarin and had Bopomofo next to unfamiliar words. It had questions after each chapter, and they were all in Mandarin as well. They were readers books for learners, somewhere at an Intermediate/Advanced level. I can't find the title anywhere for the life of me, and I lost contact with my teacher years ago so I can't ask her, but I really want to read them! Thanks for your help!

Sentence mining using sources other than myself? Clozemaster, pre-made Anki decks?

I’m totally new to sentence mining, so far have only read some articles online and not actually done it but I understand it is a great way to learn. I’ve found 2 sources so far that I’m wondering if this will work for sentence mining or do I have the idea wrong...

Clozemaster, which I understand has that extra missing word feature, but does this count as sentence mining work?

Then there’s the "Spoonfed" Chinese anki deck. (10,000 sentences with Audio included) https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/867291675

Is doing these what is considered sentence mining work? Or do i have to mine them myself for it to be as useful. If premade is okay, any other options for pre-made sentence mining work?

(I am a high beginner/elementary if that makes a difference. And I don’t have anki. I use another flashcard app called TofuLearn but can download ankidecks into it).

Mandarin Refresher Suggestions

Hello everyone. I am a recent college graduate who will be living in China for the next year, and was looking for suggestions to refresh my Mandarin over the next month. I spent a semester in Beijing and am already close to fluency, so I am looking less for Chinese lesson videos and more suggestions for someone who already speaks the language and just needs to hear the language (since I live in the middle-of-nowhere United States and don't hear much Mandarin.)

I was thinking of watching some Chinese movies with English subtitles, but a lot of times they speak at a speed and sound that a non-native speaker such as myself has trouble listening. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know, and thank you for the help.

Do HSK requirements for universities in China include the HSKK?

Hey everybody, there's something I don't quite understand regarding the HSK test. The Wikipedia article is very confusing and I can't find a solid answer to my question anywhere else. Anyway, Wikipedia says that the HSK consists of a written part and an oral part. However, chinesetest.cn says that a HSK certificate for a given level only shows results for listening, reading and writing and furthermore implies that this certificate is sufficient to demonstrate proficiency. So which is it, do you or don't you need to take both the written exam and oral exam? If so, do you need to book them separately? If not, what exactly is the point of the HSKK?

A productive word list for Chinese characters?

I have been learning Chinese for a few months now, and I've been trying to approach the process in the most strategic manner possible.

I just today discovered HanziCraft's Productive Component list, which ranks character components based on their frequency in the most common 8943 characters and these characters' placement on that list.

For example, 人 is ranked #1 despite only being present in 942 characters (as opposed to 口 which is present in 1503) because it is part of many of the most frequent characters (你, 他) .

I'm wondering if there is a list that ranks characters (and not components) in a similar fashion, as I feel that would be a great tool for organizing vocabulary priority.

HanziCraft's website states they have such a list "coming soon", but as far as I can see, the website hasn't been updated in quite a while.

TL;DR, is there a list that ranks Chinese characters based on their frequency in the most common characters? Thanks!

need help with transcribing the lyrics to a mandarin song by taiwanese musician Aristophanes (貍貓)

(you may know aristophanes from her collaboration with singer grimes, otherwise here's a short introduction to her music)

ok so here's the link to the song, it's called 'Untitled (demo)', (skip to 0.49 of the track).

the lyrics aren't anywhere online so i decided that i had to try and write them out from listening to it because i stumbled upon this and fell in love with the instrumentals.

problem is mandarin isn't my first language so i'm pretty sure there are many errors in the phrasing (i used hanyu pinyin and translations online to help, so).

also, due to the editing and backing instrumentals on the track it's a bit difficult to make out what she's saying sometimes. it's mostly talking over an instrumental background, experimental music-style, listen to it for yourself and you'll understand what i mean.

would be best if someone who's really good at mandarin or a native speaker could help out!

here's what i managed to eke out after one whole day of listening to it on repeat:

  • some phrases have a slash (/) in between them that's because i can't be sure which phrase it is (maybe they have the same homonym or similar meaning)
  • the ellipsis (...) means i have no idea what she's saying at all
  • some parts where the voice is quite clear i'm pretty sure that the words are correct, eg.

(interlude)

(interlude)

please feel free to edit anything (phrasing, add hanyu pinyin, whatever) i'm pretty sure at least half of this is wrong (i'm so sorry if you cringe while reading through it i really butchered the lyrics) also i'm not sure if people ask this kind of stuff in the forum so if it's in the wrong place i apologise for that too.

you can copy and paste the corrected lyrics in the reply.

thank you so so so much! 谢谢! 😊😊

When should you "graduate" from pinyin?

I just started self-studying via HelloChinese and I'm about a week in consistently (so I've barely started really). I've found myself obviously heavily reliant on pinyin which seems expected. I'm learning the actually characters through the character review module at a much slower rate than I'm learning the words via pinyin. At this early stage though I can't imagine not using the pinyin to be reading and memorizing the words, meanings, and tones.

Kind of a vague question, but at what stage should I be trying to forgo the pinyin entirely and focus only on the characters? I imagine this app will use pinyin through, and going through all the lessons will take months, so I'm wondering if I should cast pinyin away after I'm through with the app, or try to do it at some earlier stage.

Side question, I know tones are 100% important, but I'm curious how many learners absolutely memorize the tone fully attached when they first encounter a new word, or if you're mostly learning 5-10 words a day, and you may be able to recall the word first but not the tone, and the tones become cemented further down the line with more practice.

chinese keyboard that isn't bundled with a shitton of spyware?

i really like the way the 搜狗 chinese keyboard works, but i just bought a new american laptop, and it doesn't have all the chinese spyware/malware that slows down most of the computers that you would buy in the mainland, so im not interested in installing any software that could potentially be bundled with that kind of crap. because of this, i am not interested in installing the 搜狗 keyboard or most of the other mainland chinese keyboard programs. does anyone have any suggestions for a safe chinese keyboard i can install? i don't know 注音, so i need something that's based on 拼音, ideally something with similar functionality to 搜狗. thanks.

Chinese Dialects

Hello,

I passed HSK 4 two months ago and I've been learning Chinese for 3 and a half years. I'm really interested in learning more about Chinese dialects like Wuhanhua, Dongbeihua, Beijinghua, and Sichuanhua. Are there any good books or websites that discuss sociolinguistics in China or resources about the study of Mandarin dialects? Any websites similar to Phonemica would be interesting as well.

Thank you!

Short story (in simple Chinese): Doomed Gym Romance at the 语言学校.

The tale of a doomed gym romance, in the distinctive setting of Keats Language School (of Kunming, China).

[End.]

Should I learn traditional or simplified?

Hey, I'm new to learning (Mandarin) Chinese and was wondering which I should learn. People always say that traditional is more respectful to the culture, but (for mainland China) I've also heard that simplified is more commonly used (and there are more resources for it). I've also heard that if you learn traditionally, you can still recognize simplified, but it doesn't work as well the other way around. I'm not sure if I should be worrying about that yet since I've heard it's better to learn to speak before to read and write. What do you think?

So ummm...what is the best way to tell someone to "back the f*** up" out of your personal space?

So...yeah...I live in Macau as an expat. Been here a couple of years now, visited many times. Learning Mandarin even though I should focus on Cantonese down the line. We get a lot of mainland tourists here, and sometimes when I'm in line at a store or something like paying for my items there is a lack of personal space from people behind me....usually mainland citizens. I think I know how to tell someone to move, but I don't really know yet the best way to pretty seriously tell someone to back up. This morning I was walking my dog, and went down the elevator. Right when the doors open two guys were trying to get in, and nearly trampled my dog (a corgi). They apologized in the little English they knew, and I tried not to get too upset. Still, I was thinking that a phrase to let someone know that they're too close, and need to fallback would be useful. Is there a common technique or phrase I could use? Thanks.

Trying to make it easier to record and practice speaking Mandarin

I'm a lapsed advanced beginner trying to build momentum to work through my weaknesses. Speaking is my least developed skill; Far behind Listening, Writing, and Reading.

Wanted to use something (preferably for free or close to free as possible) to track the evolution of my speaking skills over time.

Ideally I would record myself once a week every week speaking Mandarin and would update a blog to keep myself accountable for speaking.

Heard that SoundCloud might be an option, but I not sure if it's the best option.

Are there any other options? Am I missing something?

"ng" sound 4th tone GR question

Hi, I was looking into Gwoyeu Romatzyh because that makes a lot more sense to my brain than Pinyin and when you write syllables that end in "ng" (e.g. "feng", "shong", "cang", etc.) they're written as "nq" ("fenq", "shonq", 'tsanq", etc.).

Does anyone know why the "G" is written as a "Q" and what the specific sound here is supposed to be?

I've listened to lots of pronunciation guides and it always sounds like a "G".

Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there an alternate phrase for "breastfeeding room"?

I had a friend who once had to translate said phrase for a Chinese client. She said 擠奶房 - while the client didn't take any offense it caused the group around her to burst out laughing once the client was gone.

As a non-Chinese it took some explaining for me to "get it".

Just wondering if my friend did a Chinese faux pas? Is there a better phrase for that?

Outliers Dictionary for Characters?

Has anyone been using the Outliers dictionary/method in Pleco for learning characters/vocab? I got it last night and have gone through 2 of 5 pages of HSK 1 characters to see if I would have any epiphanies, but I’m really struggling to understand the most efficient way to use this to progress with HSK material in an efficient manner. I don’t know that searching such disparate characters is the best way forward.

Has anyone as a relative beginner or intermediate really found a way to benefit from the material in terms of remembering characters and the associated sounds?

I was using Zizzle to remember the characters and sounds and tones quite successfully, but it has its difficulties with some characters and the complicated stories required sometimes.

How can I use this best, and how have you been using it? I have the Essentials edition.

Help Harvard researchers learn about Mandarin instruction for kids

Hi all,

I'm part of a research team at Harvard University looking to collect data on online Chinese teaching instruction for kids. We want to evaluate whether small, online classes might be preferred compared in-person classes, either for kids from native Mandarin speaking families (Heritage-learners), or kids from families who do not speak Mandarin at home.

If you have kids (or have thought about having kids) and want them to learn Mandarin, please consider filling out our short survey (2-4 min)! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1FCJ3ZAXt3OWZ-VDDdP6bfYyq2pRQsL6pIA-pAxm_urw/edit

You will also have the opportunity to win one of three $20 Amazon gift cards. Thanks!

Help understanding this paragraph

大家好!我正在读我的第一小说,这本书叫«移动迷宫1» (我说不定这本书对我很适合,但是我过了生日的礼物)。
Uff that was hard haha. So, I'm reading it along the English version to help me clarify ideas. But I just can't understand this part.

“看看这菜鸟,”一个沙哑的声音说,托马斯并没有看到说话的人,“住进新住所时我会给他好看。”几个孩子笑了。

This is giving me headache 住进新住所时我会给他好看

The original version:
“Look at the Greenbean,” a scratchy voice said; Thomas couldn’t see who it came from. “Gonna break his shuck neck checkin’ out the new digs.” Several boys laughed.

Can you help me? Did the translator changed the sense of the sentence?
Thanks in advance. Sorry for my English, sorry for the format I'm on my phone.

P.S. do you agree one should scribble pinyin and meanings on a not academic related book? You know some say books are sacred and all that stuff.

The character system: daily "upkeep", number of hours, and potential eventual replacement?

Hi, everyone. I've been thinking about learning Mandarin for a while, but I'm afraid that I'll spend 100s of hours learning the writing system, only to (a) not achieve any kind of working proficiency and (b) subsequently forget everything since I won't be using it 8+ hours a day.

So I have several questions for you.

  1. How many hours did it take for you to achieve news paper proficiency in the writing system?

  2. Have you found that you need to spend several hours a month just relearning/maintaining your knowledge of the writing system?

  3. I have read that it is common for even very smart native Chinese to forget characters (character amnesia). Have you found this to be a normal problem?

  4. Are you aware of any government action in the PRC or any other organization, whether political/governmental or not, to create a new writing system, perhaps similar to the Korean (Hangul) or Japanese (the two syllabaries: Hiragana and Katakana) writing systems?

I know that there is pinyin, but apparently many Chinese people don't like to use it and native Chinese have told me that pinyin doesn't do a very good job of distinguishing homophones from each other. One Chinese from Shanghai told me he did not think that it would be possible to create a new writing system and even Mao Zedong considered it, but then settled on simply simplifying the traditional character system!

Any other thoughts? Thanks!

Use of 不如

I had understood 不如 to usually be used to mean "inferior to" or "would be better to be"

E.g. 不如死了 - would be better to be dead A不如B - B is better than A

But going through the memrise grammar courses there are two examples where the order at least appears to be the other way around

1。你不是电脑高手吗?怎么连我也不如 2. 你真是老糊涂,连小孩子都不如

In both these cases the object before 不如 appears to be the "better" one (even I am better than you, even a child is better than you). Can 不如 generally be used this way or is this a specific structure related to the use of 连

A question about adjs vs verbs and 得

I know that chinese adjectives are actually verbs (hence 我很好)

And I’ve been trying to figure out why you can’t just say “我好說中文” and must say 我說中文說得很好? (or 我中文說得很好). Does it have to do with adjectives being verbs? And thats why you can’t just shove hao in front of shuo?

And what’s the diff between 我常常練習說中文 & 我說中文說得常常?

And is it the difference between the first comparison and my second comparison that 好 is an adjective (actually a verb) and 常常 is an adverb?

Trying to figure out how it’s all connected... (or not)

List of HSK words with Cantonese pronunciation?

Hi All,

I am a Canadian born Chinese, whose primary language is English. I can also speak and understand basic Cantonese.

I've been learning Mandarin for the last few weeks, and sometimes a word clicks because I realize what the word is in Cantonese, and suddenly I know how the word is used grammatically and in what context. I sometimes lookup words I struggle with on http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk , hoping it'll help.

Does anyone know if there is a list of all the HSK words with the Mandarin pinyin and Cantonese jyutping?

Thanks!
