Hi, everyone. I've been thinking about learning Mandarin for a while, but I'm afraid that I'll spend 100s of hours learning the writing system, only to (a) not achieve any kind of working proficiency and (b) subsequently forget everything since I won't be using it 8+ hours a day.
So I have several questions for you.
-
How many hours did it take for you to achieve news paper proficiency in the writing system?
-
Have you found that you need to spend several hours a month just relearning/maintaining your knowledge of the writing system?
-
I have read that it is common for even very smart native Chinese to forget characters (character amnesia). Have you found this to be a normal problem?
-
Are you aware of any government action in the PRC or any other organization, whether political/governmental or not, to create a new writing system, perhaps similar to the Korean (Hangul) or Japanese (the two syllabaries: Hiragana and Katakana) writing systems?
I know that there is pinyin, but apparently many Chinese people don't like to use it and native Chinese have told me that pinyin doesn't do a very good job of distinguishing homophones from each other. One Chinese from Shanghai told me he did not think that it would be possible to create a new writing system and even Mao Zedong considered it, but then settled on simply simplifying the traditional character system!
Any other thoughts? Thanks!
