Pokemon in Mandarin with simplified subs?

I've found Pokemon XY (desired series) Mandarin dub on bilibili and youku but only with traditional subs. Any idea where to get simplified subs? (Though I assume much must be hidden behind the Great firewall). Many thanks.

Connect wheat to wheat? Chinese idiom?

I'm watching a youtuber play a game about managing a company of streamer girls and at one point the game's assistant tells the youtuber that one of his employees is having a birthday come up and that they should throw a party and collaborate with another streamer to "connect wheat with wheat". Now the game is pretty poorly translated so for all I know they just ran everything through google translate and who even knows why it said that but I wanted to know if this is some kind of saying in China that would explain.

Where to begin learning?

Hello dear friends. I am a tour guide currently working in Turkey and I want to learn Mandarin and be able to take tours from China. I am fluent in English and French albeit have no knowledge of Mandarin and I don’t know where to start!

I am trying to save money to go study in Beijing for a year but most Chinese speakers I’ve met recommended me to introduce myself to the language before going and I have no idea where I can start. What recommendation would you give me?

Thank you.

Example sentence sources

Hi all, I've just realised that for the last ~2 years I've been using the same sources to find suitable example sentences for with my cards. I'd like to share them (through pretty obvious) and also ask you guys what you use?

I'll put mine in order

  • Wechat (best/ most natural/ environment imo, company+friend groups/chats etc)
  • Pleco (though sentences here are usually to long/boring/complex/specific)
  • Line Dict (not always sure if they are 100% accurate though)
  • Apple Dictionary (fast, offline, but not as rich as the others)
  • Baidu Zhidao + Zhihu for slang/ weird vocab

What's your favorite?

Chinese texts (HSK3)

Hello Chinese learner and masters.

I am currently learning Chinese for the HSK 3 test and am parallel trying to improve my written Chinese. My problem is that when I see a new sentence structure I can understand what it means but reproducing it is a lot harder. I want to get more familiar with Chinese grammar so I want to read some short texts (short stories?) on the HSK3 level but I don't know where to find any?

Do any of you know where I can find something like that?

On a further note I am also looking for a book that gives a basic rundown of Chinese history. Does anyone know a good book for that?

Thanks for your help guys!

Does stroke order matter?

I am very new to learning Mandarin and in my 101 class at university my 老师 mentioned stroke order for writing characters but we were never quizzed on it. By the time the exams came around I felt as long as I could get the character to look correct on paper than stroke order was not important. For the more advanced people here, how important is it to learn and apply stroke order?

Talking about Smoking in Chinese

Old man at the Great wall by Tormod Sandtorv from Flickr.com is licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0

Smoking (吸烟 xī yān) is a bad habit (坏习惯 huài xí guàn).

Cigarettes appear to have originated in Mexico and Central America around the 9th century in the form of reeds and smoking tubes. In the 19th century, the cigarette had crossed into Europe and received the name cigarette (香烟 xiāng yān). Nowadays, the adverse health effects of cigarettes are a well known fact. And yet, many are still smoking. Some people think smoking is cool, some even think it’s sexy, or just find it hard to avoid cigarette craving. But smoking harms your health (损害健康 sǔn hài jiàn kāng). It speeds up skin aging, stains teeth, decreases immune function, and cause terrible diseases. In general, smoking is bad for your body (对你的身体不好 duì nǐ de shēn tǐ bù hǎo).

This bad habit effects the ones who don’t smoke, too. Secondhand smoking (二手烟èr shǒu yān) is also harmful to your body (对你的身体有害duì nǐ de shēn tǐ yǒu hài). My body, for example, immediately responds in the presence of cigarette smoke (香烟烟雾xiāng yān yān wù). My eyes become red and I start coughing (咳嗽ké sou) non-stop.

While the tobbaco industry is thriving, many countries, and China among them, are trying to reduce smoking rates. According to the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Tobacco Monopoly, advertisements of tobacco products are not allowed on radio, television, newspapers, or magazines. The popular Chinese social media website Sina Weibo did more than that. In 2017, to support China’s efforts to cut smoking rates, the site has removed one of its emojis. The discarded emoji was wearing sunglass and had a lit cigarette in his mouth (叼着一根香烟diāo zhe yī gēn xiāng yān). The act was praised by the authorities, but not all of Weibo users were impressed. An emoji won’t cause someone to smoke (抽烟chōu yān), as one of them wrote.

叼着烟在市场散步 (diāo zhe yān zài shì chǎng sàn bù, strolling in the market with cigarette in his moth); image via Pixabay

An emoji won’t convince someone to quit (戒烟jiè yān), either. Nicotine (尼古丁ní gǔ dīng) is an addictive substance. For heavy smokers it is extremely hard to quit. This article in Chinese gives useful advice for smokers who wish to abandon this bad habit. A cute Chinese children’s song encourages smokers’ kids to exhort their parents: 好爸爸,请你把烟戒掉 (hǎo bà ba, qǐng nǐ bǎ yān jiè diào, good dad, please quit smoking). Watch its animated version to practice our vocabulary:

Challenge

I know this is nerdy but stick with me. For anyone getting complacent, too busy, or just slacking off, I'd like to challenge you to consume only Chinese media for the next 48 hours.

Only open Chinese videos on Youtube. Look at pleco, duchinese or anki (or whatever app you use to learn) instead of opening up facebook. Get on duonao and watch a Chinese movie instead of logging onto netflix.

I frequently challenge myself like this in various ways and it always helps me accumulate tons of vocab. It also keeps me closer to the language, which is important in a world of distractions.

Happy learning!

If you want to improve your pronunciation or are just starting to learn Mandarin

If you want to improve your pronunciation or are just starting to learn Mandarin

Following on from another thread where someone asked if they were past the age of listening comprehension and pronunciation, I thought I would create a follow up post with the resource I shared in the hope it might help someone else.

I've been doing the Mandarin Blueprint Pronunciation Mastery course in the last few months and it honestly so so much better than any of the pronunciation resources I've looked at before. It's been especially helpful considering until very recently I'd been living in a part of china with a painfully sounding local accent. This course has really helped me iron out my mistakes and helped me properly understand what people are saying, or at the very least, helped me hear what they are saying so I can look it up on Pleco!

Anyway, the course I paid for is currently free until July 1st so I really recommend you sign up and get it whilst it's free. I would totally recommend paying for it too, but free is a good price!

I've nabbed a video off they facebook so you can watch it here, but the actual course link is:

https://www.mandarinblueprint.courses/offers/qopA56Bi/checkout?fbclid=IwAR3JAFUX3BIhNRWGdF2A-1jqLwwVo3nTusmeg0JTGS-F6w4B7RKxBCvIdus

Hope you all find it helpful

Of the Chinese Language Learning Pack, what are some recommended textbooks?

If you do almost any sailing on the open seas you'll find a large Chinese Language Learning Pack with lots of Chinese textbooks. I'm sure lots of people have them. Has many beginner and intermediate textbooks, as well as translated novels.

Any recommendations of these? I finished Chinese Skill and Hello Chinese a few years ago, mostly stopped, and then just did those two apps again. Wondering what text books to go to next.

Simplified - Traditional conversion Deck by HSK (Quizlet)

Hi, guys. I decided to make a new deck based on the HSK list : one side - traditional (word) , another one - simplified.

Currently, I've only created an HSK1 deck, but will be updating the post.

HSK 1: https://quizlet.com/\_6t8m5g (66 words, even less characters)

Maybe, you already know some resources like this? Personally, I don't use some just because they may throw in words or characters I won't use in a near future.

Fun Chinese reading for beginners

Hello All

I am a Chinese teacher from Taiwan. I find it hard to find books that are interesting for reading, so I decided to create my own stories. The stories are based on a little dog called Haha and the plot is centered by his fantasies :)

This book shall be suitable for CEFR A2 or anyone who wishes to read for fun. I know there are words or syntax that may look unfamiliar but the rationale of the book is hoping to give pleasure to reading not understanding each word.

Here is the preview of the book - http://online.fliphtml5.com/hsjx/kdwx/#p=1

I also have an audiobook available (for Adobe Acrobat Reader on Desktop as well as mp3 files). If you need someone to read for you as you read, you may check this out

https://payhip.com/b/Oykp

Thank you and happy reading!

I am a bit confused by 為. Help me, please

「以色列」一詞為希伯來語,意思為「與上帝角力者」 ,是以撒的次子雅各與天使摔跤後,被上帝賜名為以色列,即作為以色列十二支派的始祖。記載在《創世紀32章:24-32節》。

That text has been confusing to me, because I don't know the meaning of 為 in 「以色列」一詞為希伯來語,意思為「與上帝角力者」. I can guess the meaning, and I think the first 為 means 'is' ('Israel is a word in Hebrew'=「以色列」一詞為希伯來語) (that is my guess) and the second 為, I do not know what that one means, but I feel like it just perfectly fits in that place (意思為「與上帝角力者」).

And well, if I don't know the meaning, I cannot know the tone, kind of. I have thought it could be second tone or fourth tone, and that is not helpful at all since those are the only pronunciations 為 has.

Thanks in advance. Also, that text comes from the Wikipedia article about Israel, in traditional Chinese characters Taiwan edition.

How should I relearn Mandarin?

Hey guys,

I learnt mandarin when I was in high school. I got to quite a good level as far as high school language learning goes, but when I finished high school I stopped learning.

2 years later, I want to pick it back up again. However, I don't know how to do this without the guidance of a high school teacher.

What are some good resources that aren't focused specifically on beginners?

I have the original version of glossika (where you have the PDFs and all of those audio files), which I plan to use to supplement my study, but (as they say) this should only act as a supplement and not the core of your language learning resources.

Thanks heaps in advance!

I don't think having a "Chinese name" is necessary

I guess my opinion is quite unpopular and may get downvoted, but I do find it a bit weird that there are so many people struggling with finding a good "Chinese name." I just want to explain my personal opinion and perhaps provide a viewpoint from "the other side."

Like say you are Portuguese and your name is Pedro Mat. When you learn English, nobody tells you to Anglicize your name as Peter, or even if they do, it's definitely not an urgent task. You can be Pedro in any English-speaking country and everybody is completely fine with that; you don't think "I cannot experience the [insert country name here] culture very much if I don't change my name to Peter." Then when you learn Chinese, suddenly everybody says you cannot be Pedro anymore; you have to be 马培德, whose pronunciation is quite different from your real name. Furthermore, you need to become 马培德 asap. Why is that? Why can't you be 佩德罗·马特, and your Chinese friends simply call you 佩德罗?

Of course, there is a difference between English and Chinese in that Chinese doesn't use Latin alphabet. However, we do have a system to translate foreign names, and in most cases it works pretty well (like Pedro is 佩德罗; stuff like this is pretty standard).

That said, I am not saying that having a Chinese name is wrong; rather, I think it's unnecessary, and since it's super difficult to find a really good Chinese name, it may cost you a lot of effort which could have been put in actual learning. (Also, I think having a bad Chinese name is far worse than simply using the Chinese translation of your real name.) So if you easily come up with a Chinese name which is cool, then use it, but otherwise I really don't see why you should struggle with this thing (which seems to be the case for many people on this subreddit).

好不 and seemingly contradictory dictionary definitions

Pleco's ABC extension gives 好不 two seemingly contradictory definitions with two seemingly directly contradictory examples, yet no usage notes:

  1. Not at all 好不容易 = Have a hard time

  2. utterly; extremely 好不快活 = extremely happy.

Most of you should be well aware that 容易is easy, so the example with 1 is, using the given definition, "not at all easy".

How do you know when 好不快活 means extremely happy and when 好不快活 means not at all happy?

Middlebury Chinese School

Hey all,

I’m starting Middlebury Chinese School on Friday. Given that I’ve taken 2 years of college Chinese, I’m predicted to place into level 3. According to the curriculum, we’re supposed to learn 40-60 生字 a night. Does anyone have any experience with Middlebury language school and how to cope with the workload? I have used anki for all of my learning so far, but I’m worried that the sheer amount of information will be too much to retain (I.e. 40 chars/night * 8 weeks * 5 lecture days/week = 1600 字).

Thanks

Help with Chinese Name?

I've been struggling with a suitable Chinese name for myself (a male Westerner). I've been suggested the first name 景峰, but I was wondering if that went with any notable let names, such as 朱. I like the last name 朱 quite a bit and am wondering if there are any names that would go well with that last name that aren't particularly common and are kind of in the same mood as the name I've been suggested. Anything to do with nature (sunrise, mountains, hills, sunset, etc) would be preferred, however I'm open to anything, as long as it isn't too common. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello , I got a asked by my former teacher to say a few words in her wedding. I learned Mandarin in the south of china so I tend to have a bit of a Cantonese accent, I also mix the tones a lot when reading , and I was hoping a Chinese Mandarin native or someone with a really biaozhun Mandarin could help me out. What I need is for someone to help me do a recording of what I wrote , slowly and clear , so that I can practice it and surprise my teacher and her guests . I will leave the text down below, all help welcome. I would prefer to use wechat for this as well.

Resources for speaking & listening specifically

Hi there everyone, bit of a weird question here.

I'm looking for resources for speaking and listening practice specifically. I have no interest in learning to read & write - bit of background:

I spent 9 years of my childhood in China, so have excellent pronunciation, but never really learned to read/write beyond a few characters. At university in my home country Australia, I took an elective 'Chinese for background speakers', but found it tedious and inefficient to learn (hate rote memorisation). However, I'm very interesting in improving my vocabulary and overall speaking skills, as I don't get much opportunity to practice aside from restaurants here and there.

Does anyone know of any good resources for speaking & listening practice/learning? Thanks in advance.

The meaning of "你给我记住"?

I know each individual character ... the literal translation is "You give me remember", but what does it actually mean? I'm not used to this kind of phrasing.

“When people get cancer, they die.”

In the trailer for Lulu Wang’s upcoming movie Farewell, the mother of the main character says

Chinese people have a saying: when people get cancer, they die.

I was wondering if anyone here knows such a saying in Mandarin or has a source on it.

For context, the story’s about Wang’s family keeping her grandmother’s cancer diagnosis a secret from the grandmother. The reasoning for that decision is, if the grandmother learns she has cancer, she’ll be frightened, depressed and possibly give up the will to live, which would hasten a decline in her health. So I don’t think the literal meaning of the saying is “cancer is a fatal disease,” but rather that the knowledge of being terminally ill drives people to give up the will to live, or something like this.

Spirited Away

I'm going to go see Spirited Away in theaters here in China and I'm trying to come up with a helpful vocabulary list before I go. My chinese is very weak, so I didn't know if anyone here who was familiar with the movie would be able to help out with key words or the chinese names for the characters. There will be plenty of every day words I still don't know, I want to be able to separate the unique words from the everyday and also provide myself with more context clues.

Help! HSK level assessment next week. What do I do?

I've booked a meeting with official HSK teachers nearest to me for next week. The teachers have offered evaluate my language ability so far to get an idea of what level HSK I should study.

I have been in China for several years and have absorbed some of the language. It's generally been in ordering food and drink, shopping, getting around on public transport, introductions and small talk. But not conversational level.

I cannot enroll on the actual HSK courses because the nearest center is too far away and I can't afford the course fees at this time. So the plan is to self-study and then sit for test in next year.

My intention is to buy a HSK text book from the center as soon as I know what level my current language status is.

The teachers will assess me through a half-hour conversation and, then after, recommend me a level to test.

I have one week to prepare and my ability so far includes talking about my interests, name and age, food, past residence and how I traveled to somewhere. My comprehension, however, is lower than my speaking, so I'm guessing responding to questions will be difficult.

Once I get to know my level, I can then build further and prepare for a test next year.

Can anyone advise me what to do to prepare for this assessment and what I could expect?

Looking for a good WORDS frequency list

Hi,

Recently, my main problem when studying Chinese is that I often have no idea if a word that I stumble upon is often used or not. I don't want to learn a really obscure word that nobody will understand. I got HSK6 a year ago so I have a decent vocabulary base but I still see new words every day.

It's easy to find character frequency lists, but a good words frequency list is harder to find.

I thought I had a good one with the "SUBTLEX-CH-WF" list that was built exclusively with movie subtitles, but I get some strange results and I'm starting to lose confidence in it. For instance: one of new anki sentence from the spoonfed anki deck today is "他甘愿做义工。“ When I look up 义工 in the table it's ranked 33000 (really rare), 0.2% movie presence. I thought I should scrap it, but my Chinese friend insists that it's not rare at all and that I definitely should learn it. So.. How do you deal with that problem?
