CIEE Beijing
Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this is the best thread to pose the following question, but it would be great if you could take the time to provide insights.
I'm planning on attending CIEE Summer Intensive Chinese Language in Beijing this upcoming summer, and I wanted to know how rigorous the advanced (highest level offered) reading and writing track actually is. I've been learning Chinese for quite some years now, but haven't been to China yet. I'm hoping that the 'advanced' level will be challenging enough for me, so that I can improve in the time I am there.
Thanks for your thoughts! If there's any existing threads for summer 2019 CIEE participants, it would be great if you could link them for me!

Learning characters without knowing how to pronounce them?
So last week I decided I'd learn Mandarin. Today I bought:
- Mandarin Chinese character practice pad
- Chineasy: Learning Chinese Through it's Culture book
- Mandarin/English bilingual dictionary with pictures
I started Chineasy today, and I learned how to write down numbers, but it doesn't exactly help with pronunciation. Am I missing something? Should I learn the characters first, and then learn how to say the words? I'm open to all suggestions, I just want some direction. My only experience with a language was Portuguese, but even then you learn how to say the words as you read and write them.

Search results in simplified vs. traditional
I’m not sure if this has been addressed somewhere or when this may even be important, but I’m wondering if there’s a difference in Google search results if you type in simplified or traditional. Would typing your question in simplified only direct you to simplified sources and vice verse? I’ve never noticed if there’s actually a difference because I usually write in simplified, but sometimes I search for things in traditional because I only “know” them in traditional (e.g. song titles from Cantonese singers). I’m wondering if Google and other search engines make a distinction or if they show results indiscriminately. Any insights would be helpful, thanks!

(mostly for native or literate heritage speakers but others are welcome) What are some vocabulary (or pronunciation) that wouldn't really be used in mainland China (or Taiwan or other places if you come from there) but is used elsewhere that you use personally?
Fixed title for better understanding: What are some vocabulary or pronunciation that isn't standard in your dialect of Mandarin?
Specifically Mandarin by the way.
For me (speaking Taiwanese Mandarin) it is definitely 韓國/韩国 (Standard in mainland China) vs 南韓/南韩 (Standard in Taiwan & Hong Kong), I use the former over the latter any day.

Why does 画 appear when I type the letter "u" on Chinese keyboard?
Hello Chinese learning reddit community,
This is a question that has mystified me ever since I started learning Chinese, and I can find literally no explanation for it online. Whenever I'm using my Chinese keyboard and I type the letter "u", the character 画 appears underlined, and I can't figure out why. Given the meaning of the character, I would think that it is prompting me to draw something or insert a picture, but it doesn't seem like there's any functionality there. I'm using a mac, if that helps. I'm very curious about what's going on!
Thanks for any input!

Reading practice for beginners?
Does anyone have any suggestions for sites that help practice reading for beginners? Something like fluentU except instead of videos just reading material where they tell you the character and the sound.
My problem is I got children's books and I do recognize a huge number of the symbols, but I don't know how to put them all together to create meaning yet. This is then compounded in that the children's books don't let you copy and paste the symbols out so there's no way to look up symbols you don't know. Best system I've come up with is using Microsoft Translator to copy and paste screenshots, convert those to copyable characters (when it doesn't crap the bed - which is most of the time), and then go and look up those characters manually.

Find an English native speaker练习英语
Hello, everyone.i am an university student from Beijing. I’m a little bit good at English(just better than my peers)and you needn’t worry I can’t understand you. In a month I will turn a adult and this is the first time I get touch with reddit to find a foreign friend. I wanna to practice my listening and oral speaking skills.Likewise I can help you to learn Chinese and give you some materials to help you understand Chinese culture. However,as we all know , there is a time gap so I won’t reply you immediately (because I am sleeping) but I am a patient guy who likes talking. I want to have talks with foreigners who are native English speakers and aged between 15and 30. I wish we become friends and I can act as a tour guide if you visit China! And by the way , if you are interested in you can have contact with me on other apps. (We chat Qq Are better because reddit are banned in the internet in our country and vpn is not that convenient).

A Poem for a Student in Need
Hello Everyone,
I am in the Chinese department at my University and have received a scholarship to study abroad in China this summer. As a result, my department chair has asked me to read a poem in Mandarin before the awards banquet. He has asked it be four lines or so.
I am a hopeless romantic so anything about love would be ideal.
Does anyone have anything they've come across in terms of a Chinese poem that might be fitting. If so, would it be possible to provide a character/pinyin and English translation? Thank you for your help.
Warm regards.

Something a little different today. This meme describes times when you feel all kind of upsetting emotions but have to still fake a smile somehow. MMP can be interpreted the Same as the English slang FFS... alternatively you can say 脸上风平浪静,内心翻江倒海 for a more sophisticated twist.

How to translate "keep it quiet"?
Stuck on this one. How would you translate "keep it quiet" in Mandarin? At a complete guess the closes I can think of is “请你保持默默”. Cheers!
FYI, the situation I'm thinking of is a keeping a slightly embarrassing piece of news quiet, however, this news is not so serious as to warrant it being a complete secret. Hence, "keep it quiet" as opposed to "please don't tell anyone" or "keep it a secret".

Can you open a bilibili account with gmail?
I've been learning Chinese for a while now (a year, but I'm really slow ;n;) and this feels like a solid source for picking up more colloquial mannerisms. I just don't know if I can open an account using my regular gmail or not. I know China has pretty strict censorship laws and I'm still not 100% sure what effects what. Can I use my gmail or do I need to use something else for my email?
Also! Are there things I should avoid talking about/mentioning on the platform? I'm mostly in it for the music and animation anyway, but I don't want to get in any trouble!
Generally speaking any tips on social media in China would be greatly appreciated! If there's a master post somewhere on what you can and can't do please please please link me!

HSK 3
Anybody have any suggestions for good HSK 3 resources? I took the test once and got a 93 on reading and listening but only a 40 on writing (computer version). I’m not terribly worried since I’ve since been taught now to use MS pinyin non predictive, but it can’t hurt to study in case there are words I’m not sure of. Any tips or resources?

Student and work visa tips?
Hey guys, I’m a citizen in the US and I’m going back to China this summer for Princeton in Beijing. They require a student x2 visa for me to be formally recognized by my host university in Beijing. The thing is, I’ve also made arrangements for an internship in Shanghai after the program in Beijing. I’m wondering if any of you guys have had similar situation and how ya’ll handled the visa application process. It seems that my only option is to apply for another visa that allows me to intern while I’m actually in Beijing. Tips? Advice?

Interactive pronunciation software?
I am looking for an interactive way of testing my vocabulary by using a microphone. This can be a standalone program or be part of a course. I want to repeat/ pronounce the words and see if I am correct. I heard Rosetta Stone has something like this. That program is a bit pricey for me at moment. Chinesepod had something similar decade ago. I am wondering if they still have. Chineseforus doesn't have it. I am not sure about YoyoChinese.
I will be choosing my online course these days and I would like to see which one does offer this type of speech recognition.
Thank you for any leads.

Being complimented on Chinese
I guess this is more of a culture question, but I feel like whenever I talk to a Chinese person they will *always* compliment on how "good" my Chinese is and they have said that in all stages of my 6+ years learning Chinese, even when it was absolutely terrible. I know that this is also a common experience among everyone. Now, I think that my Chinese is pretty okay, but I am wondering if they really mean that when they say it's "suuuuper goooood" or they are just trying to be polite and give face or something.
Any insights?

Does “小姐” mean something else other than “Miss” in Standard Chinese? When I visited China (I speak Malaysian Mandarin) the waitress at the restaurant gave me one crazy look when I kept calling her “小姐”.

Character Flashcard Question/request
Hello. Brand new to this sub. I was just wondering if anyone has made flashcards out of the book "Far East 3000 Chinese Character Dictionary?" I've purchased the hard copy but was hoping someone might have made an Anki deck from of it. If not, does anyone have a PDF version of the book? I can't find the PDF version for purchase to make my own flashcards. I know there are other Chinese flashcard decks out there, but the format of this book with not only the characters but several example words using the characters is perfect for my learning. Thanks and sorry if this post is annoying!

How many times do you do the 3rd -->2nd tone change?
I've learned that the 3rd tone changes to a 2nd tone when preceding another 3rd tone, and that pattern sort of continues on.
你好 ni2 hao3
我很好 wo3 hen2 hao3
Does that just keep going? Like if I had the sentence 我有五匹马 is that pronounced wo3 you2 wu3 pi2 ma3? Or perhaps is it sort of split into phrases? like [wo2 you3] [wu3 pi2 ma3]?
It seems like it'd be hard to do a long phrase because you'd have to count how many 3rd tones before you read it.

Should I change my Chinese name?
So, I've been learning Mandarin for about three years now and did two summers in Beijing in intensive programs (Including Princeton in Beijing), and interned for one summer in Taiwan. I'm now going back to China for a little over two years to do a volunteer teaching program based out of Sichuan and I'm wondering whether or not my Chinese name sounds authentic enough: 冯翱森
Until now nobody has commented that it sounds foreign, although other foreigners can often immediately tell what my English name is. My friend from China originally gave me this name because I told her I like hiking. I'm pretty content with the name but I honestly have no idea if it might be perceived differently by people who aren't used to foreigners.
