Why is spoken Chinese so hard

You don't need to answer, I know the reason - it's because because there are about 10 deferent sounds (joke) for everything and four tones, which makes everything sound the same.

Everyone always says it's the 汉字 that make Chinese difficult, but to me it's the words which all sound the same (or just way too similar).

I've been learning Chinese for about 3 years now, I'm at HSK 4 level and I find understating spoken Chinese extremely frustrating. I listen to radio, watch movies, listen to podcasts daily. I still cannot understand most of the words I know. I find reading much easier (even though reading Chinese is not easy). I put a lot of time into this language, and I am really tired, frustrated, and disappointed that after such a long time I cannot watch a kids movie or have a basic conversation because the sound are still not being deciphered by my brain into a meaning.

Am I having unrealistic expectations? Does anyone else have similar problem? I am able to read simplified stories and understand them, but if the same story is read out loud all the words stop having any meaning.

Maybe I'm just too stupid for Chinese 😔
