Question on learning Chinese for academic purposes

I'm currently considering doing a PhD in Chinese history. I'm going to have to get my reading up to snuff in both modern and classical Chinese, which in and of itself is going to take massive effort. I am currently living in China so I figure I will absorb speaking/listening along the way due to immersion. The question is, do you think it's necessary to learn handwritten Chinese? I frankly can't see myself ever needing to handwrite Chinese characters in an academic context.
