I'm at an awkward stage in my Chinese learning journey. With the exception of really slurred dialectal accents, I don't have much trouble understanding spoken Chinese, as in actually keeping up with the syntactic flow of ideas and distinguishing words. However, my vocabulary is not wide enough to be able to understand a lot of material semantically. In the interest of improving my language intuition I want to watch more film and television, but I feel most of what is available is either historical stuff which has too obscure vocabulary or dopey dramas which I have absolutely no interest in. Isn't there anything out there at an HSK4-5 level or at least something with more modern vocabulary which isn't too hard to understand without having your eyes glued to the subtitles (Day & Night) and is actually a show about something? I know Mandarin is not the best language for film and television but there must be something out there to get me going without having to be just vaguely aware of what's going on or bored out of my mind.
