Chinese Writing

I am a third year student majoring in Chinese and I have never had an issue with pronunciation or speaking tests, but I have always struggled with writing. In my individualized study courses, I am able to get by with doing well on all my speaking tests and not so well on my writing tests. I usually pass each semester with an A.

That being said, my Chinese writing is a huge insecurity of mine and I am looking for advice on how to better it. One of the main things I struggle with is my attention span when it comes to writing in Chinese. I get bored easily by the repetition and tend to just memorize what I need to at the time and then just ignore it until I’m asked to write something again.

What methods do you use to learn and memorize Chinese characters? Also, how do you come up with source material that is interesting and tests your ability to write down what you hear? Is there anything you do to make learning Chinese characters fun?

My goal for the summer is to work on my Chinese writing skills. I want to create a good foundation.
