Mandarin Michel Thomas course - Does it get better?

I'm working through CD 1 of the foundation, and the instructor has this terrible habit of getting the students to draw out the vowels in a word. I get that it's to teach tones, but saying wŭ shouldn't sound like wuuuuuuuuŭ. He draws it out for like 3 beats and it drives me crazy. Is the course worth it? Does it get better after they go through basic pronunciation? Or should I move to a different course?
