Explain North Korea (朝鲜) and South Korea (韩国) to me

So my understanding is that North Korea is called is called "朝鲜" and South is "韩国".

Can anyone explain the difference in naming convention to me? And also, if I want to mention the entire Korean peninsula, would it be 朝半岛 or 韩半岛?
