Simplified Chinese character test

Simplified Chinese character test

Hey /r/chineselanguage!

Over the holiday break I created a web site which estimates the number of simplified Chinese characters you know. It does this by testing your knowledge of samples of characters of varying rarity.

The first draft is live now here:

http://hanzishan.com

https://i.redd.it/4x5qc16a92921.png

This test is inspired by the test that /u/erjiang made by with some key differences:

  • The design is "mobile first" so it is easy to use on your mobile phone
  • The test adjusts to your level in real time - the length of the test will vary depending on your performance
  • Your result includes a graph of your performance so you may see where your knowledge starts to drop off

This is my first release so there are some limitations to keep in mind:

  • Only simplified characters are tested (with some traditional characters sneaking in where they should not)
  • The site works best in mobile but is not optimised for desktop
  • The definitions for more difficult characters are not very good or non-existent

All feedback is welcome!

Please let me know about your experience in the comments, using this survey or at the survey link at the end of the test.

Special thanks to

  • Dr. Jonas Almeida for permission to use his fminsearch non-linear regression JavaScript library
  • Dr. Jun Da for permission to use his "Modern Chinese Character Frequency List"
