Last year when I arrived to Taiwan for the first time I had a HSK 4ish level. Could get around pretty much easily, but watching series, reading books, debating, was still above my level.
Now I'm studying my undergraduate bachelor here, and my level is around HSK 6. I can now understand pretty much everything that's said to/around me. I can understand classes (in chinese), read books (choosen) and even my textbooks !(of course with lot of preparation above mostly with chinese text analyser). And I often get complimented about the fact that I litteraly have not accent (this one I deserved it, I focused on prononciation from scratch till now).
All of this was possible, thanks to my GF who is 100% supportive and has helped me sooooo much in my chinese studies. Without her, I honestly don't think I've could have make it so far. And of course to all the hard work that I dedicated my self pretty much everyday.
I still have a very long way to go though! My reading speed is still veryyy slow. I still need to learn a lot of vocabulary, when reading books. Also my papers written in Chinese are not very good yet.
But seeing all the progress make my motivation harder! I'm definitely going to get there someday.
Be patient and determined guys this is the key to anything.
