Tips for structuring self-study when you're not planning to take the HSK/TOCFL?

I'm looking to get back into studying Chinese (currently at intermediate level....maybe equivalent to HSK 3/4?). However, I don't plan on taking either of the Chinese proficiency tests. Studying from word lists seems like an inefficient way to learn (they can be very general and not always practical) and studying for a language exam is different than learning the language.

What are some tips/tricks/suggestions for structuring my studies if I want to leave HSK word lists and grammar points behind?
