Seeking opportunities (excuses) to live in China to properly learn the language

I want to gain fluency (ish) in Chinese and think a year +/- there would be great. Are there any scholarships/opportunities/sponsored things for doing so? I'm 33 with science BSc & PhD already, and happy to pack in job in the UK and/or career change/find myself.
