I've been learning Chinese for a few weeks now, and I'm progressing quite well. However, I've got a question regarding colours...

I take the following as an example:

píng guǒ shì lǜ sè de 苹果是 绿色的

does there have to be a "sè" after "lǜ" or is it optional?

what does the "sè" stand for? and is it used for colours only?

please help!
