In honor Taiwan’s legislature (立法院) today passing a law proposed by President 蔡英文 to become the first country in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage, I thought I’d share some LGBT and democracy-related Chinese terms that come up often as I’ve been living through the debate here for the past 3 years

Marriage Equality - 婚姻平等

Equal rights - 平權

Right to adopt children - 領養權

Human rights - 人權

Gay Person (common slang) - 同志 (literally “comrade”)

Homosexual (adj.) - 同性戀

Transgender Person - 變性人

Bisexual (adj) - 雙性戀

Lesbian (common slang) - 拉拉

Unconstitutional - 違憲

Constitution - 憲法

Draft bill - 法案草案

Propose a law - 提案

Public referendum - 公投

Public support rate - 支持率
