How long did it take you to hear tones correctly?

I've been studying off and on for a year and a bit more seriously for two months now (including tutors on italki). My one stumbling block so far is hearing tones correctly. If the speaker says a single word by itself clearly, no prob, but a few words in a row and I suddenly can't tell a 4th tone from a 2nd. My tone-deafness seems to be a bit confusing to my teachers.

Just curious if this is something others have struggled with and I wouldn't mind hearing some success stories :)
