How hard is it to become able to reliably pick out tones while listening to natives?

I am just starting out Mandarin and I am really freaking out about the tones. I feel that if I can hear them I will be able to remember what words are what tone. How hard is it to gain the ability to hear tones? Is it just easier to memorize the tones for every single word?
