Having trouble pronouncing the first tone.

Hello,

I just started learning Mandarin and I'm having difficulty pronouncing the first tone. I can't really say it without singing it, but whenever I listen to native speakers it doesn't sound like that.

Does anyone any tips on how to distinguish singing the tone and just saying it?
