Usage tips:

  • Translate articles: You can translate Chinese articles into your language. For example, if you are looking for articles that covers a specific topic, you might want to translate it into English first, see if the article really is about what you searched for, then go on to read the Chinese version.
  • Search for a specific article: Enter a search term, and choose “Advanced Search” in the menu that pops up. Make sure to set “Language” as “All” or “Chinese”. Otherwise, the system will search through only English articles and you won’t get anything.
  • Scroll articles vertically: You can switch to vertical view by tapping on the “9 dots” on the top-right corner of the article and choose “Copy”. However, the formatting of the copiable text is messy, and all the linespaces are missing.

Pros:

  • Fantastic user interface for browsing and discovering journals in both “graphic layout” mode and “reading” mode

Cons:

  • Some articles do not turn nicely into “text view.” If you have an article that spans two pages, sometimes the text on the second page is not captured in the text view.
  • Some search result are in tiny thumbnails “graphic” snippets, making it hard to see whether this is the result I want or not.
  • Horizontal scrolling a little awkward on the phone

Public library access: Many public libraries offer patrons free access to PressReader. Just Google “[your library] PressReader” or ask your librarian.

Usage tips:

  • Highlighting text: You can copy/paste the article into your favourite text editor or notes program, or you can print the article into a PDF, and highlight the text there.
  • A lot of articles do not have images, usually this is because the article in the original magazine didn’t have images to start with. There’s no point trying to view the magazine’s original, “graphic” version.

Pros:

  • Ability to search through the entire database of Chinese articles to find specific information

Cons:

  • Clunky user interface
  • Switching between “text” version and “graphic” version is difficult
