I memorized a bunch of characters... now what?

My #1 language goal is to learn to read in Chinese. I went to the trouble of memorizing 150-200 characters ish. Bought a graded reading book level 1 and pretty much got nowhere with it.

Aside from the fact that characters are a mammoth PIA to look up my main problem is - knowing the individual characters does very little to help you derive meaning.

I’m unsure where to go now - memorizing more characters doesn’t seem to be the right direction, but it seems very unclear how one goes about learning to derive meaning from individual characters combined. Every teacher under the sun seems to have completely different ideas on learning Chinese so Googling the problem has largely been unhelpful.

What have others done? Ideas? I was thinking maybe a textbook?
