Didn’t pay attention to tones earlier on in my learning, causing problems now.

I first started learning Mandarin through school when I was quite young, and our teacher didn’t focus a lot on making sure we knew the tones of characters we were learning. This is impacting me quite a bit now, as I would like to continue learning the language but know I’ll be very misunderstood if I pronounce words with improper tones. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can start learning the tones of words I already know and get better at pronunciation with tones?
