Best textbooks/methods to learn chinese (after 2 semesters of elementary chinese)

大家好, So as the title says, I have completed two semesters of Elementary Chinese at my university (101, 102). At the moment I'm not planning on taking the 201, but that is subject to change. We use the Integrated Chinese textbooks (completed Level 1 Part 1, and half of Level 1 Part 2).

I've considered auditing and not taking the class for credit but that would sorta fuck up my schedule (since I have to complete up to 202 in a language, which I have placed into another language at the 201 level so if I go forward with Spanish or Chinese next semester, I'm stuck. And I really dislike how the course is taught-- too fast, a lot of ineffective drills and homework--and I spend more time on this one class than all my others combined, with the help of my fiancé, and still make a B)

My husband to be is a Chinese native, so I would have some guidance in continuing to learn Chinese. So my main question is what textbook or resources should I use to continue to improve? I don't trust myself to "just pick up on it" beyond what I already have and possibly learning new vocab here and there.

Also, a less important question but I'll drop it since I'm already here... What are some good books about Chinese/culture/history/religion etc that I should pick up? I'm in the US and learned next to nothing about Asian countries growing up and I'd like to learn so I can better understand the culture and my husband and in laws.

(The main reason for me learning chinese is to bridge the communication gap a little. I don't want to live my whole life not being able to enjoy conversations with my family or having to rely on my husband to translate 24/7. In short, the more practical the better. I'm not looking to read and write and speak super eloquently or perfectly, but to be at a level I can have conversations beyond the weather.)

Sorry this post is a mess 😅😅😅
