As an example, Hawaii is 夏威夷, or xia4wei1yi2. But the three syllables could easily be pronounced in putonghua, “ha” “wai” “yi”. I’ve heard that the reason for selecting transliteration/translations is to give names nice, positive sounds. But aren’t there any nice sounds that would make it sound more similar to the original?
