What’s the difference in usage between 姑妈 and 阿姨？

For example, in my family, my mother has three sisters, so from youngest to oldest we (the children) address them as 小姨，三姨（how my cousins address my mom), 二姨，and 大姨. However, my dad only has one sister, so my brother and I address her as 姑妈. Why not some iteration of 阿姨？
