Question about referring to one's self in Chinese

So I've been watching the 2010 series Three Kingdoms (which is absolutely fantastic btw) and I noticed that whenever a character refers to themselves ("I think this is a good thing") they say their name ("Liu Bei thinks this is a good idea"). I don't speak any Mandarin, so I was wondering if this is the normal way for Chinese people to refer to themselves, or if it is a stylistic choice by the writers? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.
