Will Chinese ever be as commonly spoken as a second language as English?

Another post here mentioned the hype behind "Chinese is taking over the the world" and that Chinese might be the next big commonly spoken language around the world.

As a foreigner who has spent a few years trying to learn Chinese and making slow progress my opinion is firmly NO. The barrier for entry to become conversational is too high. Even people in this subreddit who are dedicated often take numerous years to get to basic speaking and understanding let alone enough to have conversations covering various topics.

This is just my opinion though probably mostly borne of frustration. I'm curious to hear what you all might think though? 谢谢!
