I don't get how words are brought together

I've been studying Mandarin for a few weeks now, mostly just trying to remember the pinyin. I'm picking up some words as I go, but don't understand how exactly to create my own sentence. I know I'm not ready to engage in conversation, but I'm a bit curious as to how it works. I don't quite understand how 有人 can mean someone or somebody. It's literal definition is have/with, people/person. And for 可以, is 以 necessary when 可 already means can?

谢谢
