I’ve just started learning Chinese and decided to begin by working through Heisig before doing anything else (so Heisig is the only thing I’m doing now). My feeling was that it would be best to (i) break the back of the whole character thing at the start, (ii) get the most tedious part out of the way first, and (iii) make a significant up-front investment in effort so that I would be less inclined to bail out later. I started off with 10 a day and have picked up the pace a bit to 20-30 a day and it’s going fine…so no problems there.
My original plan, though, was to do both books 1 and 2 before beginning work on Chinese proper but I’m starting to think that it might be better not to move on with book 2 straight after book 1. I assume that my progress and vocabulary is going to develop at a fairly slow rate so exposure to many of the 3000 characters contained in both books is going to be pretty limited – I’ll be dependent of doing Anki or Skritter reps for retention rather than learning out in wild, which is somewhat less than ideal. So the question is, would it be better to plough on with book 2 or to finish book 1 and perhaps do book 2 later or at a much slower rate alongside the actual Chinese study? In case it’s relevant, I’m planning on using FSI Chinese, the Routledge ‘Basic Chinese: A Grammar and Workbook’ and probably The Chairman’s Bao. Thanks.
