Cyber Monday 20% off Outlier course: How Chinese Characters Actually Work & How to Learn them

Many of you know of our character dictionary for Pleco, which was released last year, covers around 2000 characters, and is still being expanded. We've gotten some amazing feedback from our users:

"I bought this. It has helped me recognise and even pronounce characters I have never seen before thanks to my recognition of patterns from the explanations." --Soroush Torkian (Canada)

"After a lot (really a lot) of failed tests with different books, apps and methods, the only way that the hanzi sticks in my mind is ODCC's brief, concise and REAL explanation!" --Alessandro Agostinetti (Italy)

But quite a few of our customers have gotten in touch with us, saying things like:

I think Outlier is a fantastic tool, but I wish there was a video or something where I could learn how to use the system to learn a character. I understand the system, but I want to know how to put it into practice in my study.

Well, Ash (our CTO and Lead Researcher) has been teaching a course on Chinese characters at ICLP in Taipei—one of the world's most prestigious Chinese language schools—for the past several years.

So we're thrilled to announce that we're taking the material from that course and turning it into an online course! And we're running a Cyber Monday deal right now: 20% off the course (the discount won't show up in the cart, but will be applied when you click "Check Out").

Over the course of 3 months, we'll go through 300 characters curated especially to teach you how Chinese characters actually work.

Each week, we'll publish 1-2 video lessons, plus supporting PDF materials covering the same material in more depth or from a different angle, plus 20-25 characters selected to reinforce the concepts covered in the video lessons.

We'll also go into tips for memorizing and recalling the characters.

Ash's PhD qualifying exams were two 6-hour, handwritten essays in Chinese with no books, phones, or dictionaries allowed—just a pen and paper.

He forgot how to write one character he hadn't written in a while, but was able to use his knowledge of the logic behind Chinese characters to recall it correctly.

Imagine having that kind of "superpower!"

Well, we're going to teach you exactly how to do that yourself.

By the end of the course, you'll have a strong understanding of the logic of the writing system, as well as practical strategies for learning the characters more efficiently.

The course will begin on 7 January 2019. You can sign up ahead of time here, and if you sign up using that link by midnight PDT on Monday (26 Nov), you'll get 20% off!

Note that while we are calling this a 3 month course, you can go more slowly if you'd like. You'll get lifetime access to all the materials! Also, the course will cover both simplified and traditional characters. And the course will be completely self-contained, meaning it won't require you to have any of our other products. However, purchasing the course will also get you a discount on our other products in case you do want to purchase them.

We're happy to answer any questions you may have here!
