Noob question: are there certain characters dedicated to grammar? ex. is there a specific character for "his", and another for "he"?

Sorry for the stupid question, I did some searching but couldn't find the answer. I'm not learning Chinese, I'm actually learning Japanese, but I was just trying to draw some parallels between the two.

Some characters in Chinese (not sure if they have a better name than "characters". Is "hanzi" correct?) are imported into Japanese (in Japanese they're called kanji. AFAIK Chinese does not refer to them as kanji).

In Japanese, all our grammar needs are taken care of by the phonetic part of the language (letters called "kana"), which is maybe why I'm having such a hard time understanding how grammar works in Chinese.
