Hey. I've been trying to learning Chinese for a while now. Trying to find consistency over a few years. It really just hasn't been clicking. I've "progressed", but not at a consistent rate. I'm thinking about just trying another language. I recently did try, and have stuck with for the most part, Japanese. Maybe it's the resources I've been using. For Japanese, I have a really good textbook, combined with Anki flashcards, and a great teacher via YouTube. I have a similar self-study setup with Chinese, but I just get discouraged the more I go. I hope the same thing doesn't happen with Japanese, but I don't know. Chinese is just really, really, difficult for whatever reason. I don't even pay attention to tones that much right now, because there is so much other aspects to try and worry about. Especially grammar. Might try iTalki again, but as I've posted before I had negative experience there. Honestly, it's amazing to me how some people don't get discouraged to the point they give up. Perhaps language learning isn't for some people. I don't know. With my hour self-study today, I can tell my brain doesn't want to learn. I think it's the negative thoughts. Which is why I'm posting here to see if there are any self-help strategies to get over the mental hurdle.
