I'm having a hard time understanding this concept of time duration in my textbook.

Hey another question from my textbook. It's about time duration. This is from Lesson 14 in Integrated Chinese Level 1 Part 2. I think I'm just overwhelmed by the options to talk about time duration here in the examples/book explantions I'm about to show you from the textbook. Here they are:

Honestly, I'm not even sure the difference between the subject and object in these sentences. Also, I don't can't understand the difference between the first two examples, and numbers 3 and 4 like the book is trying to point out. Or why 了 is used there, but not earlier. Can you help me where the book can't seem to? Thanks.
