Once I learned ~300 characters very well, I read the first book of Chinese Breeze, and I could barely understand each sentence, even though I understood all the characters. I ended up reading the sentence on my own, then copying it into Google Translate and Bing Translate to figure out what it meant. Then I re-read the book without GT, and while I understood most of it, it seemed to me that I was simply recalling GT.
Then I picked up the second book of Chinese Breeze and read it all without using GT. While my understanding was dramatically better - I would estimate 40-50% - I still simply had a ton of difficulty understanding sentences, even though I knew all of the characters. Today I'm going to re-read that second book along side of GT/Bing.
I plan on buying the 3rd book, and my hope is that my understanding will shoot up to 75%, and by the 4th book I'll hit 95%.
Basically, my strategy is to simply continue reading, and using GT for things that don't make sense, and hope that my brain will eventually start to understand.
Is there an alternative way? I imagine that there are text books out there specifically aimed at this particular problem.
