Tips for starting to self-teach the language?

I’ve just started getting into (I’m assuming) Mandarin by going on duolingo daily and writing everything down, from new words with its pronunciation and new sentences. I’ve gotten a few units in already and I’m wondering if there’s any better resources and at what stage I should start using them so I can understand them. My schedule for my first semester of college eventually had me drop the intro to chinese class I signed up for because it conflicts with all of my required classes, so it looks like I’m on my own to teach myself. Is there anything a practically brand new beginner can look to to start learning the language on the right foot? Thanks to anyone who can help!
