This meme first appeared around 2014 and has gone viral ever since. It has changed from a political meme into an apolitical meme which can be used as secret signals of connection and be seen as cultural capital as is written by scholar Kecheng Fang from University of Pennsylvania in his latest paper:
Toad worship memes became a special type of cultural capital with which people could gain mutual understanding and respect as well as access to a largecommunity, all while enjoying the coded conversation. As a meme sharer said duringthe interview,
"There was once a time when I would burst into smiles if someone used the English word “naïve” in our conversation. I would understand the underlying message and consider him or her to be on my side. Later on, “too young too simple, sometimes naïve” became so popular that I wouldn’t be touched anymore. Some less-known phrases became our new secret signals of connection."
