Etymology breakdown Shāngyè

Is the following true and accurate?

"Somebody asked me about the word ‘business’ in Chinese. This Filipino asked me so I explained to them in this way. Business in Chinese has two words Shāngyè. Shang means life and to that there’s this element of business itself is dynamic. It is a living organism, it evolves. But the interesting part is with the word Yi____. Yi ___ means ‘meaningful’ and if you put them together it’s all about that [business] dynamic and How you create a relationship within that and how do you make relationship meaningful but the point I wanted to add is the word Ye itself, in Chinese - Chinese is a beautiful language, the word _Yi__ itself has two components. The top component is Ing which is sound. The bottom component is sing which is heart, so it’s listening to the heartbeat. A lot to do with feeling the pulse, understanding, listening to the heartbeat and you can go a long way by winning trust with that."

Thank you!

Attitudes in China?

Hi guys! I’m an adopted Chinese and I am looking into learning/minoring in Mandarin in college (I regret being a stubborn child who dropped out of those classes) but nevertheless I am wondering what are the attitudes in China of those who look Chinese but cannot speak it? My sibling (who is white) recently majored in Mandarin and said that people in Chinese can be in-groupy (if that makes sense), towards Chinese people.

I’m not really worried about being in US and not being able to speak it but rather in China (for immersion/study abroad)?

If anyone has any experience or insight with this issue, please feel free to share!

Is being an ESL teacher that bad?

So this morning I posted a picture of myself getting third place in a Chinese competition and expressed wanting to be an english language teacher in China. Everyone in the comments told me not to do it. Why? I want to double major as an English teacher and be a lawyer and be an English teacher while attending law school. Why is being an English teacher in China so bad besides low pay (I don’t care about money)

BUPT or SHU for a year of study?

I am just wondering if anyone knows about Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Shanghai University. Ill be going to China in September for a full year of study of Chinese language only. I've passed mine HSK 3 the other day. I have gotten accepted to SHU but I have also an option to go to BUPT.

My question mainly is, which University is better overall? As in the facilities and quality of university. Also, which university would be better for Chinese language? Beijing has an advantage as its pure mandarin there but maybe SHU might have better teaching than BUPT? Also, Beijing might be a bit cheaper for me but I might be able to get scholarship for SHU, but then would living cost (not rent) and transport be cheaper in Beijing?

Thanks for the help.

Started using HelloChinese today

I’m probably A0 right not I don’t really know many characters. I used LingoDeer for a bit and I found out they charge now. I had a free Spanish course but I have to pay $60 if I want to learn Mandarin. But now I’m using HelloChinese. Compared to LingoDeer, how good is it? Could it get me to A2 or B1?

I also tried Duolingo but the Mandarin tree isn’t very good. I might still use it to drill grammar

Writing practice - Is what I'm doing a waste of time, or is it useful?

I've searched on the ol' Google machine but I can't find much definitive about what I wish to ask. Right now, my writing practice consists of the following using Anki:

  • Look at the simplified characters and write their traditional equivalents (I study traditional characters).
  • Write words (bisyllabic or otherwise) twice.
  • Write individual characters five times.
  • View characters and write out the bopomofo without seeing it.
  • View sentences and practise memorising and writing them.

I get the feeling that I'm wasting a lot of time. Is it really helpful for me to write the traditional characters against simplified variants? Does writing sentences actually give me enough help to justify the time it takes me to do so? Should I remove the memorising component? Right now, when I memorise, the sentence I saw is hidden and I test my ability to both remember the words and write them out.

Request: App to Translate Hanyu to Pinyin via Image

Hi there,
I've been learning Chinese for a while now, and my learning resources have begun to omit pinyin entirely. Unfortunately, this makes it hard to learn the pronounciation of new characters, as I no longer see them side by side. I could look them up individually, but I'd rather have two complete versions of the same text.
So far, all I've tried is using Google Translate's camera feature, but I can only get it to translate to (horrifyingly mutilated) English or barebones Hanyu. If there is a better way than just extracting all the Hanzi and throwing them into a separate translator, I would much appreciate knowing about it, since that way all the formatting is lost. Thanks!

Previously fluent, now cultural failure, how to start again?

I grew up in Singapore and have learnt Mandarin throughout kindy/ primary school/ high school. I was never amazing at it but got through the exams. At 15, I left the country for Australia and danced with delight at the thought of never again having to memorise a vocabulary book.

I'm 30 now and can barely speak the language outside of simple conversation and feel a bit of a culutral failure. Adulthood has made me realise that being bilingual is a useful skill!

I'd like to be fluent again, am not super fussed about reading (all the vocabulary has fallen out of my head at 15). I'm at a loss as to how to start. Lots of the podcasts are aimed at beginners and I wonder if there's any resources that would be useful to me?

Learning Chinese abroad: Tsinghua vs Fudan University

Hi everyone.

I'm in the midst of applying for a one-year length chinese program, and have decided to apply for one of these two universities. Is anyone able to share their knowledge or experiences of these programs at these respective universities?

I know that Tsinghua has an amazing reputation, but its mostly a science-orientated university, whereas Fudan is more humanities-orientated. So Fudan's language program would be better. However, I have also heard other rumors that Fudan teachers aren't as enthusiastic about teaching Chinese, and that Tsinghua should be the option if you are really serious about learning chinese.

These are just random rumors I found online. Do they sound true?
I don't really care whether I live in Beijing or Shanghai, so I'm more concerned about the education quality.

Why are Chinese teachers all women?

Search "learn Chinese" on YouTube: most teachers are Chinese women, occasionally white men. Male Chinese instructors from China are very, very rare. The only ones I know (other than myself) are Litao Chinese and Twin City Chinese. Now why is that?

Another curious observation is that among Chinese-white couples, the majority are white males and Chinese females, rarely the other way around.

Are these two observations somehow connected?

Audio textbooks with English comments

Hi, r/ChineseLanguage!
Does anybody know any Chinese audio textbooks for beginners (HSK 1-2)? I want to listen to them while riding a bike or jogging so I may not care about the screen.

Something like vocabulary building, dialogues with comments and explanation in English. I don't mind if they are for kids.

I tried to listen to 佩佩猪 cartoons but didn't learn much from them since my vocabulary is pretty small yet.

Thank you!

Language Learning With Netflix Chinese Dictionary - 矮子

Hello! I was under the impression that LLWN didn't have a dictionary for Chinese but I noticed the only word that had a dictionary pop up was for 矮子 which is short person/dwarf which seem so odd that that is the ONLY word to have it, do other people have the definition of a word pop up when they hover over a word? Is my browser just being weird and only showing it for 矮子?Even LLWN has a warning that there is no dictionary with Chinese but it definitely does just for this one word and im like ???

See- https://imgur.com/nT2kXOr

The yellow popup is an extension I added so It doesn't matter that LLWN doesn't have a dictionary I just find this so odd that I haven't seen this with any other words.

particularly i was hoping to replay some older SNES era final fantasy games in Chinese. but i haven't found many that support it officially.

I'd be surprised if language patches didn't exist, but my 中文水平没有那么好,所以自己上网找到,再install太难啊。

something like FFIV complete for the PSP would be phenomenal.

What conjunction can I use here to make it sound more native?

意大利美食又好吃又多变。而且,谁不爱意大利菜?

I am trying to say: "Italian food is delicious and varied. Plus, who doesn't love Italian food? (rhetorical question)"

This is for an oral test, and I feel 而且 doesn't sound right here, is it too formal? Is there a more common, spoken conjunction that can be used here that makes this sentence flow better? Could I replace 而且 with 对?

Also, while we're at it, is my use of "又。。。又。。。" correct here?

Many thanks in advance

Audio files of natives speaking sentences with translations? Anyone remembers these old school CD's?

Hey there,

I'm searching for pretty straightforward audio files with Chinese + English sentences.

There once existed this type of CD's that would just repeat sentences in the target language, together with translations.

I want something like that, preferably with some 2 or 3 repetitions of the same sentence?

Before you suggest that I can do these type of things on my own with some native audios and some programs, I'm way too lazy for that.

I found Coffee Break Chinese and I'm listening to it, but it's a bit too staged for me and their accent is annoying.
Does the kind of thing I'm searching for even exist?!

Thanks ahead

About Autism in Cantonese and Mandarin for April, Autism awareness month

April is autism awareness month that began with the UN-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day on April 2.

I wasn’t aware of this until I started researching the topic for my latest learning Cantonese and Mandarin podcast on autism (自閉症 / 自闭症 - zi6bai3zing3 / zìbìzhèng) and vaccinations (疫苗接種 / 疫苗接种 - jik6miu4 zip3zung3 / yìmiáo jiēzhǒng) and how the first recorded inoculation may have something to do with a Taoist hermit, a nun, and a ouija immortal. It also goes into the two different ways to say “thank you” in Cantonese.

For those of you learning English, I talk about something akin to “the world is your oyster,” “come hell or high water,” meltdowns, some cooking terms like: mirror glazed and piped decorations, and a bunch of other stuff…

Piqued your interest? It’s at: https://soundcloud.com/leslie-frank-643243096 (IF you’re on a desktop computer or tablet, this link is fine, BUT if you’re on a cell phone, this link might ask you to open/download the SOUNDCLOUD app, so if you don’t want to do that, choose the RADIOPUBLIC link below; IF you choose to download the app, click on the magnifying glass at the bottom of the app and search for “leslie frank”, then click on the “口” (mouth) icon; you’ll probably need to scroll down until you see the #15th episode)

Strategies for improving reading speed

I have studied Chinese for 8 years now, but I recognize a problem is that I read very slowly--at least, as compared to how I read in English. I often read the news in Chinese, and I understand it--perhaps only looking up one word in every few sentences--but it's just painfully slow. Reading more colloquial texts (e.g. texting with friends) is faster, but if it's a long message with complex topics, it still takes me a while. But differently, I am utterly incapable of "skimming." Instead, I need to read essentially every word, which takes a long time.

Do people have any suggestions for how to improve reading speed at the advanced level? I expect the answer to be simply "just keep reading," but I would appreciate people's insight as to whether that works, or if there are any strategies to accelerate the process.

My current strategy is to read almost everything out loud, so that I can practice pronunciation/tones. I could read faster if I ignored the tones, but I'm not sure if that is to my benefit. Perhaps I should just ignore the pronunciation when I am reading?

As another example strategy, do people find that being able to "write" characters is helpful to speed reading them? The set of characters I can handwrite is much smaller than those that I can recognize (since I constantly am typing Chinese but rarely handwriting it). I wonder if I were to improve my ability to write characters that would somehow put them "deeper" into my mind, making it easier to then read them.

I appreciate any thoughts.

Interested in learning Mandarin just need some advice on whether to go to a class or just use online resources.

Basically the title,

The university I graduated from offer a Mandarin learning program which takes approximately 3 years to full complete (3 levels, 2 classes for each level). I was thinking of going to this class over using online resources because I have always liked classroom environments for learning topics I have absolutely 0 previous knowledge of, however I am quite skilled in being able to self-teach a variety of other topics. Would you guys recommend I do the class? Or should I utilise a renowned online resource?

Cheers for the help.

How to explain to someone he needs to type spaces after periods?

I follow a Chinese person on HelloTalk who writes posts in English, but he never types spaces after periods, so all his posts look like this:

"Today is my 50th day learning English.I learned English grammar for one hour this morning.Later I drove my son to school. It was raining today. My work has been very busy."

I tried to explain in English that he needs to type spaces after periods, but he gave some weird explanation about his phone not letting him do it, which makes no sense because he's obviously able to type spaces between words. What do I say to explain this in Chinese?

Books to read to help me become more conversational?

I have decent vocabulary (I passed HSKII after giving lots of guesses) but I suck at forming sentences. I can do it but it takes a lot of thought. So I don’t hold many conversations with people cause it takes me too long to think through a sentence.

Someone on here recommended reading native material. Any suggestions? Something pretty basic? And preferably available on Kindle.

Question about my name

My name in Chinese is 杨涵露, which I have a general sense from the dictionary that it means a poplar tree that has dew.

I was wondering if there was any deeper meaning or if any of these words had a slightly different meaning in the past that could alter what it means. Any thoughts on the name in general?

Much appreciated!

On the off-chance that you're having trouble exporting Chinese cards from AnkiDroid to Inkstone using Anki2Inkstone, here's the solution.

When using Anki2Inkstone to export my Anki cards to a Anki2Inkstone.list file then importing that file in Inkstone I was given an error reading something like "can't parse vowel: zhong51guo52". I finally realized that Anki2Inkstone was adding a 5 after every pinyin, so I downloaded a code editor (QuickEdit) off the PlayStore, opened the Anki2Inkstone.list file found in SD/Anki2Inkstone/ and did a "Replace all" search, replacing all "5" with nothing(leave the replace field empty).

I have to repeat this process every time I add new characters to Inkstone, but it takes less than a minute. Note that Anki2Inkstone also replaces certain punctuation with something like "%27", so repeat the above process replacing these symbols and you should be good.

The dev of Anki2Inkstone /u/lonlazer hasn't posted in 8 months so I wouldn't expect further patches or support.

Difference between 话 (huá) and 语 (yu)

I see this sort of difference coming up in my Chinese teacher’s lessons for saying different languages vs Chinese lesson videos on YouTube. Videos will often use 语 to designate the name of a language instead of 话. Do these characters have a different meaning on their own, if any? My teacher is from Taiwan so it may be a dialect thing?

Native material is accessible - do I still follow a textbook?

I love reading and recently found that I've reached a level where a horror manga I stumbled into (奇奇怪怪) is very readable - I'm getting through 2 chapters per lunch break pretty painlessly. There are ~270 chapters.

I live in Taiwan and work in a bilingual office, so I'm quite immersed. I'm also literate in Japanese, so characters aren't a problem.

Currently I'm meeting with a test prep tutor who has set a goal for me of the HSK4 in fall, and I meet with another tutor to work through a textbook. We're partway through book 2 of practical audio visual Chinese by NTU.

I'd like to drop PAVC and replace that hour with an hour of conversation about what I read, but I'm a bit hesitant. I encounter lots of Mandarin because of my situation, but since I'm still at quite a low level, I feel that this explicit instruction is helpful.

I want to replace the hour with conversation so that I have a consistent place to practice the grammar/sentence structures I encounter while reason.

What do you think? Do I go for full immersion and learn what I need as I go or should I stick with a traditional structure till I'm at a higher level?

Does this Chinese Post Contact by Phone when your Package Arrives?

Hi everyone. I emailed a Chinese SIM kard delivering service that normally delivers to hotels and the like to ask if they can also deliver to Tianjin foreign studies university. They replied:

只要您能提供详细的地址,并且能有一个local的电话号码供邮递员联系您取件就可以。

What do they mean by "一个local的电话号码供邮递员系您取件?". I'm ordering a sim card because I don't have a local number, does anyone know what they mean by this?

Learning Mandarin with an underbite

Hello everyone. I have been interested in Chinese for a long time, and a few weeks ago I started to teach myself Mandarin. Something I am very concerned about is pronunciation. I know I can't expect to sound like a native speaker after just a couple of weeks, but I am worried that I won't be able to reach a level where people can comfortably understand me.

I have a slight underbite and I had my teeth adjusted with braces in high school. They're straight now, but there is a 3-4 gap (guesstimate) between my upper middle four teeth and lower four teeth. You don't notice unless I close my jaw and show my teeth, and I can speak both my native tongue (Swedish) and English fine. I know Mandarin has a lot of different s and sh sounds though, and I have trouble doing tight sh sounds since my teeth don't touch. Does anyone have any information about this? I tried googling but nothing comes up.

I can't imagine that no one in China has the problem as me, and I'm sure they can be understood anyway. I am just very worried that I keep studying and will never be able to speak with people properly. :(
